Brake fluid level varies

Hi All. Last week got a message 'low brake fluid level' and sure enough it was approx. 6mm below lower level, so topped up to max level.
4 days later i was underthe bonnet and noticed that the brake fluid level was right up to the top of the tank. When i started the motor the level dropped back to the max level within a minute. Pedal is OK, brakes are OK
I suspect the ABS but have no experience with it. Do I have a none return valve problem or Do I have a dangerous fault

Fluid is drawn from tank to pressurise accumulator, movement of level is normal, but must not go below minimum with engine running. To top up start engine ensure pump has run. If pump does not run press brake pedal until it does, when pump stops top up to max level. Do not overfill.
