Have you not heard of google?? If ya had and you'd googled "freelander towing weights." Which would have been quicker than posting on here. You'd have got this as the top result.

LandRover. Will you be alright clicking that link& scrolling down? Or would you like me to cut & paste the relevant information for you.

can anybody please tell me the towing weight for my she-lander please? she is 1.8 petrol. many thanks

Some websites state 1800kg, others state 2000kg.

If you passed your test on or after the 1st of January 1997, you're not allowed to tow anything which is heavier than the car itself. (Roughly 1555kg) This is because towing restrictions were placed on car licenses obtained on or after the 1st of January 1997. It can be quite confusing, but basically:

1. Not permitted to tow anything greater than the weight of your vehicle
2. Not permitted to have an outfit (i.e. car + trailer) which exceeds a combined weight of 3500kg MAM

A lot of people don't realise this and get caught out.

try again but first do a search for towing on ere. I've posted the proper legal formula for wworking out exactly what you can and can't tow without B+E entitlement

1800KGs is with the Towing vehicle loaded up to its MAM
2000KGs is with the Towing vehicle not loaded up to its MAM

Nope if the manufacturer states 1800kg max towing weight then that's the max towing weight regardless of what you're carrying in the vehicle itself.

Oi, the question was what is the towing weight of a Freelander. Answer, most vehicles can tow a Freelander.

Before buying them, people need to know these things.

It's a free service you know. ;)

I didn't say that! But yes, in your previous post you're right. What I said was slightly incorrect.

The Directgov site slightly confusing and also misleading as a result of that. (surprise surprise!) I Googled around and this cleared it up:

Highways Agency (Aka the people who cause congestion on our roads) said:
An ordinary category B licence allows you to drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes Maximum Gross Weight and to tow a trailer that weighs up to 750 kilograms Maximum Gross Weight, giving a Maximum Combination Weight of up to 4250 kilograms.

Drivers who have got a B category licence are entitled to tow a trailer over 750 kilograms Maximum Gross Weight provided that the gross weight of the trailer does not exceed the unladen or kerb weight of the towing vehicle, and the maximum combination weight does not exceed a total of 3.5 tonnes.

If you want to drive a larger vehicle or pull a heavier trailer you will need to take a category B + E driving test.

Highways Agency - Fit To Tow?

It is still overly complicated though, to the extent that the Government's own website doesn't even clarify it very well. It would be easier if they just said that drivers with that licence are not permitted to have an outfit that exceeds 4500kg!

No, the reason for the 1,800kg is that you can exceed the gross train weight, the actual max towing weight is 2,000kg.

Kerbweight of a Freelander 1.8 is about 1457kg, if you are towing a caravan you could theoretically tow a van up to that weight fully laden although the 85% rule suggests it should not weigh more than 1238kg.

Out of interest, is the 5 door version somewhat heavier than the 3 door version? I tried to find figures before but gave up.

Extract from hand book.

Towing weights
Max trailer weight
Petrol models.................................................... 2000 kg ............................4410 lb
Diesel models.................................................... 2000 kg ............................4410 lb
Max nose weight*
Petrol models.................................................... 140 kg ..............................310 lb
Diesel models.................................................... 140 kg ..............................310 lb
Gross train weight
(maximum weight of vehicle plus trailer)
Petrol models.................................................... 3760 kg ............................8290 lb
Diesel models.................................................... 3850 kg ............................8490 lb
Max roof rack load ................................................ 75 kg ................................165 lb
NOTE:
If the trailer weight exceeds 1800 kg, the vehicle payload
must be restricted (ie. to less than the Gross Vehicle Weight) to
ensure the loaded combination is within the Gross Train Weight
limit.
* To improve stability, it is recommended that you adjust the nose
weight to the maximum limit, when loading to the maximum trailer

weight (also see note above).
