Juddering when setting off

Seems like the gearbox judders when launching (well, it's hardly a launch but can't think of a better word right now!) from standstill. Similar to the style when you see a learner setting off from a set of lights and you see them bouncing down the road. On gravel its so bad it will wheel spin on each judder!

Starting off in 1st, 2nd reverse does the same thing. Doesn't judder at all once moving though. Clutch pressure seems normal, gear change physicall feels the same and makes no noises when moving. Tried various different styles of setting off to no avail. It's not something that has come on gruadually either, just started doing it the other week.

Is this symptoms of a clutch on its last legs or is the gearbox starting to die do you reckon?

Sounds like your hand brake is over adjusted let it off a bit. or its lining has slipped off. Jai

Didnt think of that. Would I expect the handbrake to be quite tight if that was the case and perhaps not go up all the way?

First time or everytime you move off?

I was thinking either rear crank oil seal leaking or water in the flywheel housing has caused a rusty patch on the clutch.

it could also be a gear box mnt knackered

i would check the gear box mnts first, but you need to take the presure of the mnts by jacking up the box, does the gearbox move when you start off, other problem is oil contamination on the friction plate.

Had this happen when i got my landrover. Turns out it was the rear crank oil seal as mentioned above - it was getting oil all over the place, but mainly on the clutch plate.

Every time i went to pull away it felt like the vehicle was going to shake itself to pieces - literally!!!

Once it was on the move it behaved in a reasonably civilised manner for a series.

Well I do have a fair amount of leakage under there, not suprisingly of course. I guess the only way to find out is to take it apart and look at it. What do people find is the easiest way to get the clutch off? Remove grill panel, move engine forward... or seat box out?(bearing in mind I don't have standard seats and the seatbox is well and truely fixed on my landie). Will check mounts I think before doing the above, would be annoying if it was them and went to all that effort.

Fairly sure it is not the handbrake as I can feel when it bites, so it's not like it is biting when it shouldn't do. If that makes sense.

I don't remember (off the top of my head) the handbrake drum arrangement on a Series, but would it be possible to go for a short test drive without the handbrake drum fitted so that you can rule out the handbrake shoes 'grabbing'.

I could disconnect the handbrake, but I can feel when the handbrake bites so I really dont think thats the problem.

I have noticed that the 4WD selector does not have a return. So If I do the normal thing of being in 4WD in high, stop, move the hi/low selector into low then high again, the yellow knob doesn't pop back up. Could this be causing (or be a symptom) of the box not engaging correctly?

I had this turned out it was my rear u bolts on my springs so my diff was trying to move up and down but mine also had a bit of woble when you accelerrated and let off.

Thought I would check the U Bolts just on the off-chance. They were fairly tight, tightened them up now but has made no difference.

think the case of contaminated clutch you would only notice it while still letting out the clutch , so once the clutch is fully released it shouldnt shudder, so you can rule out that problem by checking that

Have a look at the engine & gearbox mounts if these have failed or got badly oil contaminated they can cause this sort of effect too

Well, changed the clutch (it was pretty oily and worn out and problem has gone. Hurrah!

It's not the handbrake.

It could be any part of a worn or badly fitted clutch/release mechanism or oil ingress as suggested.

It could also be as simple as the clutch needing bleeding. I had this recently -thought the clutch was f__ked. Had same symptoms initially before it got even worse. Bled the clutch thoroughly and hey presto - perfect.

It may not be this but best to check it out before going to time and cost of your proposals.

Having said that, I would not tolerate oil leaks on a series, there not necssary, so would sort that anyway...
