Hi all,

I'm turning my disco into a semi-permanant camper. I'm not going all out, but in a nutshell, I'm going to remove the 2nd row seats, build a storage/ sleeping platform, and install a cooker and maybe a water feed system from jerry cans.

The idea is that my recovery stuff, tools, and oils etc will go under the sleeping platform, along with some fuel, and water. Then there should be a space in the passenger footwell where personal kit can go when needed. Even still having a sleeping platform means that I can't cram the disco completely full of stuff, cos then I'd have nowhere to lie down, so I'm looking at looking at putting some cargo nets in to maximize the space.

So far I've decided I will try and put nets on the rear door card, side doorss, and the roof, but not sure how these attach. Self tappers into the headlining? Also where else might you put them?

Any other points or ideas on this are most welcome.

I would be more inclined to fit some sort of roof rack and box to carry some items. How about fitting a folding shelf to the rear door to use for cooking, washing etc.
If I were going to fit cargo nets to the roof lining I would more then likely screw them to something a bit more secure like the grab rails front and rear.

There is a modular cargo netting system on the market or was, which I saw at Billing, install the heavy duty straps and then add the netting and net pockets as required, I only spent a few mins looking and then moved on with the price list (expensive).

It may be still around.

I think for longer trips where I need more stuff, or if I had my other half with me aswell then I will have to take some on the roof. My disco doesn't have the factory fitted roof bars and and I'm not taken on spending the £350+ on a huge roofrack so that I have to think twice every time I go into a height restricted car park. I've seen sets of 3 roof bars for landrovers which are about 65 quid so might look into getting them at some point.

I've removed the 2nd row seats so off now to get the plywood to start making this sleeping platform so I will keep this thread updated on progress.

I've had similar thoughts for festivals. Fold down front passenger and rear NS seats, drop in a lift in/lift out frame with ply on top - hey presto a bed. No more trudging for miles to get from the car park to the campsite with all the camping gear!!

Nets on the headliner is IMHO a no-no. It's not strong enough and self tappers will certainly never hold unless the back is strengthened.

It was infact that very picture which inspired this thread.
The platform I am building will be a very similar height to the platform in this photo.

and having a net in the headlining is a good way of storing things like a thin matress, coats, etc.

So far on my sleeping platform build I've removed the 2nd row seats, and cut the wood to size. Off now to buy some baton and hinges, and then will begin screwing it all together tomorrow. I will try and get some pics for this thread.

I'm hoping that once it's been assembled and fitted in the disco, I can carpet it in situe. Then it's a case of making some curtains for all the windows in the disco, and finally looking at what options I have regarding a matress. I'm thinking about using some old caravan foam, to make a matress which folds out to cover the platform as a bed, and then folds up to be used as a sofa, or folded flat to be stowed away in a roof net, or under the platform.

I remember that camper build!

I wouldn't recommend screwing just into the headlining as its not very strong (just removed mine to sort out the inevitable sunroof leaks), but there are 6 strengthening/bracing bars running across the roof that you could use.

If you need to screw in where there are no bars PU adhesive some home made brackets with nice big feet on them that you can add plenty of adhesive to.

Me and my dad both had reverse cameras fitted to our transits and both of our LCD screens have had to be re fixed by ourselves as the fella that installed them had only self tapped them to the headlining, and they are no way near as heavy as fully loaded cargo nets.

In the event of a crash the last thing you need is lots of stuff flying towards you at high speed at head level .
