i have just bought a 19j turbo engine and have just bolted it to the gear box and engine mounts (had to make new driverside one thou) in my series 3 light weight. but was just wondering how these engines perform mpg, horse power etc and reliabilty.

I've got one in my 109. Only really put it in because I had it here, wouldn't have gone looking for one. Power wise I think it's ideal in a series landy, not too much but way better than a 2286 diesel. Think they;re sposed to put out about 80bhp which is way less than a tdi. I've never bothered trying to work out fuel consumption but it used to do about 25mpg in my 110 so less than that in the 109 due to the lower gearing. As for reliability it's like any other old diesel engine, treat it right and it'll be ok. They're not a bad lump if you get one that's been looked after.

Cheers I only put it in because a friend was selling it for £75 and I had to replace the clutch in my 2.25 petrol so it made sense plus it's in really good nick and low mileage !!!

I'm sure you'll like it. Probably benefit from an overdrive if you go any distance with it. I only really use mine local so not worth the expense but it would make it a lot more relaxed at road speeds.
