Well I decided to whip the head off to have a look and sure enough the missing cap was stuck in the number 8 cam follower, holding the follower in the up position, so I guess for the price of a head gasket I might as well put in back together* :) * Now I've got over throwing my dummy :)

Looks like I've discovered where the missing valve stem cap went. No 8 pushrod isn't moving at all so I guess it went down the pushrod tube and has jammed the follower. Oh well, given the welding and brakes that will need doing for the next MOT I think this Disco is dead.

Yes I was impressed it got me home. But the front 2 pots were ok lol. Mind you I had to use low range to get on the drive.

I've got a spare somewhere, the trouble is I haven't seen it since I tidied the workshop up but it's around somewhere. The only thing I need to buy is one rocker shaft stud (the rear one) that has sheared off so I won't be able to get that before Monday. With a bit of luck it will be back...

Gary I'd look at a Discovery 300tdi Auto if I was you. There's far less electrickery to go wrong, loads of second hand spares available and your budget should cover the car and a decent mig welder easily. The usual places for rust are the boot floor, sills and inner wings and panels are easy to...
