Series 3 Correct tool roll/tool kit for post 1980 Series Land Rover

Thanks Mik87. The attachment shows the tools up to 1985 but there is only 1 metric spanner mentioned as 11mm x 13mm. This same spanner is included in an early 90/110 toolkit which I obtained from eBay. The kit also contains pliers, adjustable wrench, screw driver, spark plug spanner and 2 bell...

Series 3 Correct tool roll/tool kit for post 1980 Series Land Rover

That’s good advice Fatrover. I managed to order a set of period Elora metric open-enders on eBay and I’ll add the things you mentioned to my on-board toolkit.

Series 3 Correct tool roll/tool kit for post 1980 Series Land Rover

Thanks Bobsticle, tottot and Fatrover Seems I need to look out for an original Series 2a tool set with mainly AF spanners, then add in a few period metric open enders. When I’m displaying my station wagon at events I like to put on show all the standard and optional accessory equipment such as...

Series 3 Correct tool roll/tool kit for post 1980 Series Land Rover

I have a 1982 model Series 3 SWB station wagon with mainly metric nuts and bolts. When the move to metric was made in 1980, did Land Rover upgrade the accessory toolkit from the pre 1980 version with mainly A/F spanners to make a similar one available but with metric metric spanners? I’ve been...

Diesel fuel starvation just after starting

Success at last! On Friday I fitted the replacement lift pump from Turners, bled the system and got the engine started. While the engine was running I checked out all the fuel lines and found two minor leaks. One was in a pipe join partway between the filter and top of the injector pump. The...

Diesel fuel starvation just after starting

Thanks rob1miles. An interesting piece of information. Today I replaced the fuel filter with a Delphi one as you suggested Turboman. I also replaced all the seals. I checked the banjo bolt and there was indeed a tiny hole which I pushed a fine strand of electrical wire through to confirm it...

Diesel fuel starvation just after starting

Thank you for the further comments. Excuse my ignorance but what is the purpose of the small hole in the banjo bolt? If the hole gets blocked, what effect does that have on the fuel system?

Diesel fuel starvation just after starting

Thanks Turboman. I’ll check the banjo bolt when I change the filter. I don’t remember seeing a non-return valve at the filter but will check. I’ve checked the tank connection but all seems tight with the hose in good condition. If no improvement I’ll source some clear pipe as steve2286w...

Diesel fuel starvation just after starting

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve ordered a genuine LR lift pump repair kit. Perhaps the diaphragm is faulty or not sealing properly. The filter is yellow and marked JCB. I’ll try for a good quality replacement and check seals. I’m not sure what the purpose is of the non return valve I...

Diesel fuel starvation just after starting

The 5 main bearing 2,25 diesel from a Series 3 that’s fitted in my Series 2A has had fuel problems for the past couple of months when starting from cold. It starts almost straight away each day from cold with some heat applied but stops after about 4 seconds. It then turns over for ages with...

    White smoke on over-run

Thanks divie. Yes I have access to a pressure tester. I can check the spray pattern at the same time. I’ll get a good torch so that I can ensure all the old washers have been removed. Lots to do now so I’d better get cracking!

    White smoke on over-run

Thank you rob1miles and adrianhogg. The smoke occurs on overrun even if the engine is only revved slightly. I think I will try advancing the pump timing slightly to see if the smoke clears without the engine sounding harsh in normal running. If unsuccessful I will check for wear backlash in...

    White smoke on over-run

It starts well from cold with heater plugs. The injector pump and injectors were overhauled and recalibrated by a pump specialist a few hundred miles ago. I think what I am saying is that on the over-run the engine is performing some of the braking effort. It is no longer driving the car. So...

    White smoke on over-run

Thanks rob1miles and nickjaxe. I’d understood that on the overrun the injector pump closes fuel delivery down to an idle setting. Therefore if there is wear in the drive skew gear or its brass bush, this can cause the timing to retard until the engine reaches idle speed, causing white smoke...

    White smoke on over-run

Thanks tony109 Because it only happens on the overrun I think it is a worn gear or bush under the injection pump causing backlash and a retarded pump setting. I tried to get a replacement from Turner Engineering but they are out of stock. Not sure what you mean by a brake butterfly.

Series 2 Oil filling tappet shaft

Sorry. Just realised the 12j is a 2.5NA. I guess I was thinking of the 19J

Series 2 Oil filling tappet shaft

Hi Adam What’s the latest on your problem? Thought you had a 2.5 NA but you mention a 12J?

    White smoke on over-run

Thank you Lynall and Turboman. Unfortunately it is the later pump without the internal timing marks and I don’t have the special timing tool. At well over £200 to buy I am probably stuck with trial and error small pump set-up adjustments for now. I had thought about wear in the drive gear from...

    White smoke on over-run

My Series 3, 5mb 2.25 Diesel engine has had the injector pump timed by trial and error. It now seems about right with no knock on acceleration under load with minimal black smoke. However it white smokes a lot on the over-run. When out of gear and after the throttle has been blipped it white...
