    rusty freelander

Mine was well rotted. visibly nothing wrong, the thick paint was intact on the sills but the metal underneath was just mush. Rear door handle wasnt great either.

    FL1 Sudden total brake failure

Also, check a rear wheel cylinder hasnt failed - failed seals....shoes come adrift and piston popped out etc. There will be fluid down the rear of the backplate and dripping onto the wheel and tyre if so.

Rebuild project thread - many photos.

It was 2.2mm i think, which was a bit too thick in hindsight, but I had it in the garage so used it rather than buy any more. 1.8 or so would be fine.

    Freelander 1 roof weight

Its a fair chunk more than 10kgs. I would guess more like 20 - 25. I used to have just a single pulleywheel hanging from a bit of old seatbelt tied to a roof beam in the garage and a bit of rope over the pulleywheel. I made a sort of web with 4 old straps with hooks on the ends all tied together...

May have possibly bent valves trying to undo crankshaft pulley bolt :(

Well maybe you should have said the tensioner had failed in your initial post. This has nothing to do with you changing the clutch. If you want help from a forum you need to give the facts. All of them. "Dear medical forum. I was cutting my toenails and now I cant see out of my left eye" ....3...

May have possibly bent valves trying to undo crankshaft pulley bolt :(

Uh......uh.....I......I just cant even..... How the fck have you in any way affected the timing belt while changing a clutch? seriously? Turning the crankshaft with the gearbox off wont have done anything unless you were spinning the engine backwards. Just turning it a bit wont have done...

How to recondition a VCU yourself.

Edit - it will take a little thought....you will need to account for the quantity of fluid that will stay in the grease gun mechanism and nozzle - shouldnt be too hard to work out though and add that to the quantity you need to inject.

How to recondition a VCU yourself.

Nicely. If you use grease nipples as plugs, then why not use them to fill it too? You can buy a brand new grease gun on ebay for a few quid. (or clean your old one if you can be assed) Hold it pointing downwards and pour the silicon fluid into its open end. You will then be able to pump the...

For Sale Freelander TD4 Synergy 2a tuning box plus accessories

Im not really sure what they are worth second hand, so make me an offer. Remember that they are around £250 new including the MAF. This is a few years old and while my car ran faultlessly I cant guarantee the condition of a used MAF.

What have you done to your Freelander today

I honestly dont know. I have lost all enthusiasm for cars generally these days. Six needy older cars is taking its toll on my finances and time, and the Mazda pickup does everything I currently need from a 4x4....tows well, carrys stuff for work etc etc. I genuinely like the Freelander and have...

What have you done to your Freelander today

The Freelander has been at the bottom of the garden for the last few months due to a noisy gearbox. I have realised that I am unlikely to be bothered finding and fitting a replacement so have put it up for sale locally. I have put the synergy 2a and Special Vehicle badges up in the for sale...

Freelander 1 TD4 clutch replacement problem!!!

Wedge the clutch pedal down overnight and see if that helps. If not, its time to get serious. The slave is a sh1t design. The input and bleed take of point are not at the top of the circular cylinder so there is always a chance of getting an air bubble in it that is hard to shift. - wrap ptfe...

MOT for Freelander - 2 wheel brake tester ? (AGAIN !)

But if the rear wheels are locked with the handbrake then when the rollers try to turn the fronts the VCU will tighten and the front wheels will lock up too, making a brake reading impossible. IMO tyres will slip on the rollers before damage is likely to be done.

    Freelander 1 Tow balls

Its not about how securely fixed the towbar is, its the distance between where you fix the rope and where the bar bolts to the chassis. This length has two disadvantages, it risks being twisted or bent if you arent pulling straight on it and secondly if it doesnt bend it provides a nice amount...

MOT for Freelander - 2 wheel brake tester ? (AGAIN !)

Here in france when the tester inputs the vehicle data at the start of the test the computer flags up that it needs the extra rollers put down for the brake test. This is just a heavy frame with a pair of rollers that is laid on the floor behind the standard brake tester so the rear wheels sit...

    Freelander 1 Tow balls

Yes, all 2 bolt balls are a standard fitment. However a towball is not a great recovery point. The distance between where you attach the strap and where the tow bar bolts to the chassis is quite long so provides a bit of leverage to pull the towbar off the chassis or twist it. On a straight...
