    Problem solved guys - bite the bullet and took the car to my local garage. Turned out it was the brake adjustment. It was way out. so had them adjusted and cleaned, new discs and pads. £172 all in. Job done. Thanks to all that have offered help and advice, i'm sure i'll be calling on...

    Sounds like a bleeding the brakes then is the 1st thing to do and then work from there

    Go one then mate - servo, vacuum leak, expensive what would i be look at. I know that the front discs are a little worn but not terrible and the front pads are nearly new (about 800 miles ago)
