    Which engine?

If you've got a baby on board you want 100% dependability, the Cayenne is reasonably reliable for a large SUV - but still way less reliable than a "normal" car. If he wants a large SUV then buy a Lexus RX450H - a bit boring (quick off the lights though) but it won't go wrong. I did exactly the...

10w40 oil at good price (imho)

Rover V8s typically suffer from ring blow-by and make their oil dirty - diesel spec oil tends to have more detergents - which is what you need to prevent sludge. In a word (well a few) - go for it!

    L322 Toyo Open Country H/Ts

Not on a Landy but my (unmentionable) large replacement SUV! - jut bought a set of the above mentioned tyres, the 18" rims making AT choices thin on the road so I went for what is a road biased mud and snow marked tyre. First impressions - seriously impressed! - on the old Bridgestones the car...

    P38A 4l or 4.6? Manual or Auto?

4.6 Auto - no question - if you're going to tow try to find a Thor (99 onwards with bunch of banana looking inlet manifold) they have much more torque just off idle.

P38A V8 talk me out of it?

Find a decent Thor 4.6 that has had a top-hat liner engine fitted and pay a little more for it. I don't see the point of a luxury SUV with a tractor engine in it.

    Opinions Please

Having a young child (yes at my age!) I decided it was time to buy a newer daily driver, the intention was to keep my P38 as a weekend plaything - however the previous owner wanted to buy it back off me so I let her go. My P38 was generally pretty reliable but it was just starting to feel very...

Anyone driving to France, new rules from 1/7/15

Which reminds me to take the nitros off - they wouldn't let me on the Eurostar with it last time!

Anyone driving to France, new rules from 1/7/15

Hmmm I've got a bike trip to France in August - I wonder how much of that applies to two wheelers?

Fake Land Rover Evoque From China

So the most unreliable bit of an FL2 is the Swedish (Now US) bit?

P38 on springs- Poor ride quality!

I've been off road in all sorts of cars - I came to naturally equate off-roading with spectacularly bad discomfort, spine jarring bumps or the other end of the scale (RRC on springs) comfort with scary lean angles and a lot of off-throttle bouncing around waiting to retain control again! Then I...

Anyone local with Diag/reset box of tricks?

Tis a shame, I was over that way on Saturday - could have chucked the diag gear in the boot.

Another what should I thread! (p38?/l322?)

If you want a cheap car with a wonderful interior for £4Kish just buy a post 2000 Jag XJ8 4.0 - they are pretty reliable (compared to Range Rovers) are quick, extremely comfortable, handle nicely and are surprisingly good on fuel when cruising (30mpg at 65mph) - don't bother with the 3.2 - same...

Another what should I thread! (p38?/l322?)

My P38 was pretty reliable as a daily driver over 50K+ miles - however that really is pot luck - you might get a good one - you might not and of course I kept on top of maintenance - for a P38 that means replacing stuff before it breaks not oil change and kick the tyres! Even the newest ones are...

3.6 TDV8 engine failure and a cautionary tale

That's truly shocking service - I tend to do all my own servicing unless there's still a warranty to keep, so my recent dealer experience is limited - however when I had my Jags both dealers I used were superb - couldn't do enough for me - and now I've just had my current car serviced (whisper...

    4.6 vs 2.5 tdi

Diesels were more reliable than petrols for a few reasons:- Diesel fuel is a lubricant - so top end wear is reduced compared to petrol - particularly which when running rich (cold start) which washes oil off the bores and valve stems. Modern fuel injection goes some way to countering that...

Stupid and confused about oils

Other than extra heat soak - oil doesn't know or care about power. 1,000 mile oil changes are just utterly barmy. You will not see any difference with 5,000 mile changes - particularly if you're running Mobil 1. Gearboxes care about torque - a tuned engine tends to make power further up the rev...

    4.6 vs 2.5 tdi

Knackered FIP, knackered Turbo - Head issues - all possible 2.5 TD issues - and you're rapidly heading toward Rover V8 rebuild costs - and of course with a 4.6 you have a transmission that - if looked after - should out live the car. The TD is quiet once moving IF you are driving gently -...

    4.6 vs 2.5 tdi

I demanded the stains were retained with my V8 - for authenticity and all that.

Stupid and confused about oils

Is that a typo or did you really say 1,000 miles!? When an oil company I worked for did a massive project to research others' oil before embarking on a fully synth project of its own - pretty much every brand of oil was toast (viscosity wise) by about 4,000 miles - except one - Mobil 1 which...

    4.6 vs 2.5 tdi

Diesels are the devil's work - wouldn't have one if you gave it to me. And I wouldn't buy any product that has anything to do with BMW anyway - after what they did to Rover. Rover V8 all day long - 4.6 so you get a decent transmission into the bargain. Note: Other opinions are available :D
