As promised...here is the verdict. The garage think the problem was caused by a faulty ignition switch that was not releasing properly after turning the key and so keeping the starter motor permantly engaged. Seems to make sense... Sorry for the delay in updating...only got it back from them...

Thanks for your replies guys. In the end I decided to take the prop off this morning on the basis that no oil could leak out of the axle as might if the shafts were removed and I wasn't sure which one had broken anyway. Also I figured the garage would want the diff out to get the broken bit...
