Yes it can be done! Optimism and drive is what you need. Design some portfolios, offer advertising on your truck and give a fair % to charity. Done by a friend of mine right across Africa for his honeymoon. 18 months, and the company sponsors paid for the lot!

You would be well advised to contact the Royal Geographical Expedition Advisory service. They maintain a database of people waiting to be approached for expeditions. They can also arrange Land Rover training, and expedition first aid too. Cheers, Paul

You have answered your own question. Go with the latter. In Africa there will be no difference in availability between the series and defender. Take lots with you.
