    Disco 1 Overgeared & Underpowered 200Tdi Options

Time to do something about my bobtail D1, its gearing and/or engine. 1990 bobtailed D1 with a 200Tdi that seems to be a little worn out, no intercooler and a heavy external roll cage. I fitted an intercooler last year to see how it ran but it just caused it to burn oil with little improvement...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

I was going to to the brakes on the Freelander today but it's too damn hot so I grabbed the donor drum instead and finished stripping it to see what I have. Took some work to get the piston out as you said but I got there in the end, and I'm very pleased to say that this piston is the later...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Well I stripped the drum out of my donor box tonight and measured the rings, 1.56mm for the high clutch and reverse clutch. how does that compare to the 80K and 31K boxes? I won't be taking the drum apart any more just yet but I suppose what I do depends on the condition of the piston and if I...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Bought the gearbox on Ebay and picked it up tonight, there was even a coupon to get another 10% off so I only paid £36. I'm assured that all the parts are inside, it certainly weighs enough.

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

I'm certainly not in a rush so I intend to take it apart and check the friction rings at least, no idea how many miles this gearbox has done. If there's little to no chance of there being an issue with the piston then I probably won't go that far. Thanks again!

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Mine is 2002, the box I'm looking to buy is 2004/2005. I'm undecided if I will remove the piston on the donor to check it, seems like it would be the smart thing to do. I will certainly remove my old one once swapped. The car didn't come with much history, for all I know the gearbox could've...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Excellent, thanks. Yeah for the price I think it's worth the gamble, for ease of getting the parts out to rebuild if nothing else. Really intrigued to see if a later box has the old piston or the new one. I have a quick-assembly engine crane if it's too heavy for a couple of us to lift, I...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Thinking of getting a spare gearbox myself to do this, was going to tour the local scrappies but just came across this on Ebay. It's local but I think they've got it down as the wrong name, or have they? Did the JF506E get a model name change at some point or are they just going off an internal...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Thanks both, don't know why I couldn't find any information about it. I'm definitely a newbie when it comes to Freelanders having only owned this one since February. I'll get another set of axle stands.

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

I was looking up how to jack up a Freelander 1 with a trolley jack but got nowhere, meant to ask somewhere in here but forgot. Can it be done? I have the kit for jacking beam axle Land Rovers but not Freebies. I started looking at portable lifts like this one as I also have an MX-5 that may need...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Great to hear that the problem is fixed, not that I ever had any doubt! I'm going to save all the pictures, study them carefully and then plan my attack. I don't believe that any of this is beyond me apart from not having a way of levelling the vehicle, Hipporamps look great but they're now...

Spot on, thanks. Fingers crossed for the test drive.

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Good to know the piston can be bought in the UK, I had only seen that one ebay auction. Could you post the part numbers for ordering from Vanmatic please? Did you keep some old fluid to put in or are you going 100% fresh?

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

The casting of that part doesn't look too special at all, I expect a second crack would appear and then it's game over. Page 100 in the manual shows the changes mentioned between the old and new parts, would be interesting to know if the material is different too.

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Seems like a great result, looking forward to seeing the pictures. Any tricks you've learnt for rebuilding the drum without parts flying everywhere?

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Well you make that look simple! I hope it really is just a case of having that drum rebuilt and reintalling it. If I had the parts in front of me I'm confident I could design a 3D printable alignment tool for the clutch plates, it only has to be small. I guessed that Ashcroft maybe didn't...

    Back once again

Thanks all! Sorry the pictures are massive, the code I use on another forum for scaling them doesn't work here. To be fair I really enjoyed that car, I just got it at a really bad time and ended up barely driving it. Charging was also a pain. Things will improve over time. If I had the cash I...

    Back once again

Hi All, I joined and made an introduction post in 2006 but I didn't have a Land Rover back then. A huge amount has happened since. Not sure why I haven't come back until now, I used to frequent the LRO forums until they were shut down and the Northants4x4 forums. Anyway when I first joined I...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

Thanks, I found a different thread that mentions it but this is more detailed. I don't really have a safe way of getting it up to a working height and level but I was considering just getting 5L and pumping it right to the bottom of the pan using my home made pressure filler (garden sprayer)...

Freelander 1 Td4 Jatco 3rd to 4th Flaring, Slip- Solved

I'm guessing we're looking at page 100 in that manual - 2-3 FLARE OR SLIPS IN 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH. The diagram looks nice and clear and they say that the part is/was available, I'd happy pay someone to just swap out that piston! Never seen F4 on mine yet. Since it's potentially a crack and only...
