Add to that red diesel is inferior, so much so that even some modern tractors like JD's have trouble running on the stuff, I wouldnt put it in a TD5 or TDCI. That said a TDI would be fine I'm sure.
Lost power, lost oil pressure and got a knock. Typical symptoms of big end failure, but wouldn't cause gases to come out of the dipstick. Were the gases really being blown out of the dipstick tube hard, or was it a moderate puff?

The water/sediment trap does freeze and can cause you some problems. I would be giving it a clean out before I even started to think about the injection pump.
There is a water drain plug at the bottom of the sediment bowl but you are best off to get a seal kit and take the whole thing apart...
