Add to that red diesel is inferior, so much so that even some modern tractors like JD's have trouble running on the stuff, I wouldnt put it in a TD5 or TDCI. That said a TDI would be fine I'm sure.

The water/sediment trap does freeze and can cause you some problems. I would be giving it a clean out before I even started to think about the injection pump. There is a water drain plug at the bottom of the sediment bowl but you are best off to get a seal kit and take the whole thing apart...
