Thanks, that's really useful to know. I was told that if it was the turbo then there would be lots of oil in the inter-cooler and pipework which would need to be cleaned out. The garage said removing the inter-cooler was a big job and they were quoting me in the region of £650 for an exchange...

I disconnected the mushroom thing then took off the intake pipe which had some oil inside, as you can see there was also some oil in the mouth of the turbo. I started it up like this without the intake pipe connected and the smoke was still there albeit I only ran the engine for a few seconds...

OK guys, Ive had a non-specialsit mechanic take a quick look at the huge plumes of smoke, he tells me it is definitely blue oil smoke. Does this help any with a possible diagnosis?

That's a good point. The vehicle seems to be running fine but it failed its MOT on this leak and a few others. I am happy to fit a new FPR but am a little worried if the leak is actually coming from somewhere else.

I found I had to also loosen the ARB drop link just to give me another inch or so and it took me 15 mins to work out it would be easier to install the spring if I fitted the shoe to the bottom...
