    reconditioned IRD and VCU?

Hi, I would just like to chip in here and second that comment from Austen. I had a recon VCU earlier this month and the service from Bell Engineering is excellent - and very reasonably priced too. Only trouble is...now my IRD is rumbling like crazy so it looks like Austen is going to get...

Many thanks, bigdenbailey, that's well worth a check. I'll report back tomorrow...:)

    L Series surging idle

Hmm..interesting theories, phlebas. I'll investigate along those lines. Can't be an EGR problem though, as I've disconnected the MAF sensor in the inlet duct (following recommendations from others). That made no difference at all to the idling or to the normal running...

    L Series surging idle

Latest update: I've now checked the CPS (waveform OK), TPS (measured OK on ohmmeter), air filter (OK), Y-shaped manifold (was dirty but now cleaned out), No.1 injector sensor (OK), changed the fuel filter, and checked the priming bulb (no obvious leaks)... BUT THE ENGINE STILL SURGES...

Crankshaft Position Sensor tester - for free!

OK, more detail has been requested, so here goes: The free "Scope" software actually uses your computer's sound card as a (albeit limited) kind of oscilloscope, the input being the Mic socket of your computer. This means, of course, that the bandwidth of the scope is only from about 20Hz to...

Willing volunteer to measure their TPS resistance?

I am trying to identify the problem with an uneven idle in my 1999 L series Freelander. As I've not got access to the appropriate LR test equipment (or similar) I am stuck with testing each possibly faulty sensor by hand. I have just tested the Throttle Position Sensor with an ohmmeter and I am...

Crankshaft Position Sensor tester - for free!

Hi everyone, Whilst investigating an uneven idle in my L seies Freelander my attention was drawn to the CPS. How to test it though? Then I came across a free program on the internet which turns your laptop into an oscilloscope..! I downloaded it, then made up a lead out of an old headphone...

Anyone got an SP ACR2 for sale?

Hi chaps, I'm looking for a Sykes Pickavant ACR2 Diagnostics reader and pod/cable for my Mk1 Freelander XeDi diesel. Looking to spend around the £100-mark. Anyone out there looking to get rid of their old unwanted reader? Thanks for your time! :) Martin

Anyone interested in diagnosing L series faults via OBD port?

Hi, Are there any other Freelander 1 diesel owners out there who would like to "talk" to their car via the diagnostics port? I've just bought a 1999 Freelander with the XDi (L Series) engine which has a "surging" idle so I've been checking for any obvious faults using advice from this forum...

    1999MY diesel Freelander fault diagosing

Hmmm...interesting. On another forum I've just seen this:- "The Freelander 1 uses a funny interface. I’ve got one of the elmscan 5 devices. The cheap ones on ebay often have a pirate elm chip, which doesn’t do what it should. Not got any errors on mine, but this is all I can see...

    1999MY diesel Freelander fault diagosing

Well here goes... I half-expect a chorus of "oh no not that old chestnut again!" but I'll ask anyway: I've spent ages looking through this forum for a definitive answer to the question as to whether it is technically possible to connect up an interface cable and laptop running simple...

    L Series surging idle

Hmmm...are the CP sensors prone to failure? Can they be tested in situ? I wish there was a way of testing all the sensors via the OBD connector (like on some more modern cars), but I'm led to believe that unless you use a Testbook or Rovacomm thingy then it's not possible on the older...

    L Series surging idle

Hi everyone, Well I'm still getting used to the new Freelander diesel (1999 model), but I'm definately not happy with the idling. It seems OK just after starting but when warmed up it gives a kind of surge (very short increase in revs) above its nominal 950rpm approx every 2 seconds. It is...
