Thanks guys - just what I was after! Original one has cracked casing so has deffo had it!

    Alternator Connections

Hi All, I have just replaced my alternator on a 200TDI. The original has a plug connector with 3 wires going into it. The new alternator just has a series of studs on the back... Could anyone tell me how to wire this up correctly please? I have found B goes to battery, D to diode and W to...

    200 TDi Sluggish

Cheers Fenby, Indeed, very interesting (if a little technical!!) I keep thinking through the fuel comment; surely if it's a fuel issue (i.e. wrong mixture / starvation / etc) then I'd be seeing some other issues such as smoke, or rough running / juddering under power? I'll have a proper read...

    200 TDi Sluggish

Thanks fenby - appreciate the advice. I think though the boost depends on the FLOW of exhaust gases, not the heat. As it's revving fine, it's therefore generating the correct flow of gas, but it's just not spinning the turbo fast enough to generate necessary boost at the inlet air side. Either...

    200 TDi Sluggish

Thanks Buster - don't have one! I've found out from the previous owner (and the chap who put the 200tdi engine in) that he didn't adjust the fuelling to take account of the fact he had no intercooler - from reading other posts I understand this may have smoke consequences but shouldn't affect...

    200 TDi Sluggish

As far as I know.... She revs freely no problem. Just replaced fuel lift pump and filter so fuel starvation shouldn't be an issue. Pipes - save for replacing all (which I do intend to do) I can't see / hear any leaks. The top pipe balloons out slightly when revved hard, so there's pressure...

Thanks Dr P - turbo removal and strip down is next on the list - a job for better weather though!!

    200 TDi Sluggish

I've tried shortening the actuator rod by 4 turns, and still the same problem! Without taking the turbo off (job for the better weather!) I can't tell if the wastegate is actually closing properly - with the rod disconnected it moves freely and seems to make a 'closed' noise if you see what I...

    200 TDi Sluggish

Curiouser and curiouser! Even with the wastegate actuator disconnected, and my foot to the floor in 3rd up a hill, 0.5bar is the best I can get! Turbo spins freely (just checked again - I can rotate it with my finger tips and it turns fine) Suggestions please!!!

Thanks for the advice - what sort of quantities of both are we talking here for a full tank o diesel?

    200 TDi Sluggish

Very true! I'll give it a go and see what effect this has on boost and smoke! I also have the previous owners details, so could always ask him... Keep you posted and thanks for the advice...

    200 TDi Sluggish

To be honest fenby, I haven't. I really wanted to get to the bottom of why a 'standard' engine is not running right, before trying to 'tune' it up. I may give this a go, but it's a lst resort, and doesn't really get to the bottom of the problem (might sort it though, I grant!)

    200 TDi Sluggish

Well guys and gals - I'm at a loss! Everything that has been suggested I've checked to the best of my ability, and it seems fine. Yet still I'm getting barely 0.5bar boost pressure! Me's giving up...

Fitting a boost gauge. Simple? Nope. Fail!

It MIGHT be - certainly on mine though the braided hose is the oil pipe for lubricating the bearing. The only other place you could tee into will be where the air enters the engine - the inlet manifold. This will be at the end of the grey (turbo air outlet) pipe where it goes into the engine...

Fitting a boost gauge. Simple? Nope. Fail!

Can you remove the air intake hose (the big black one) and possibly the air outlet hose (the grey one) and see if that reveals anything? May help a bit to be able to see all round the turbo...

Fitting a boost gauge. Simple? Nope. Fail!

The pipe you are referring to (with the bolt on the end) looks to me like the oil pipe that lubricates the turbine bearing. It's different from my 200 TDI but I believe they both have oil lubricated bearings. The pipe you want will most likely be a rubber one and will connect to the wastegate...

Fitting a boost gauge. Simple? Nope. Fail!

Hi Palace, Not sure if I can help, but I've just fitted mine OK with the help of Busterbus photo. Mine was very similar though... There should be a 'piston' type arrangement on one side of the turbo with an arm linkage - this is the wastegate actuator. It opens when the pressure gets to a...

    200 TDi Sluggish

Thanks Dr P. It seems to drive Ok ; there's a little whiteish smoke on startup but other than that very little smoke. Exhaust is a side exit jobby so no chance of being squashed. I'll check the oil flow to the turbo when I have a chance this week and let you know.

    200 TDi Sluggish

Thanks both of you for your replies. I don't actually have an intercooler (the previous owner decided to fit power steering instead so no room for the traditional IC) The boost figure I gave of 0.5 bar is under load (full throttle up a hill). The actuator arms moves OK with a spanner for...
