    IRD screwed? identify this noise

Yes, there was much smiting with extreme prejudice. It sounded like the old days in the mines of Moria ⚒️⚒️⚒️

    IRD screwed? identify this noise

It was indeed the IRD. Replacement IRD + VCU from Bell fitted and all is sweet. Separating rear prop was easy, the front was an absolute b*tch! ;)

    IRD screwed? identify this noise

Thanks, new IRD and VCU it is then. Since it’s Y Reg and was kept under the sea at one point seemingly I wonder if it’s worth just forking for new props, supports UJ etc and sticking in new bits all the way along rather than trying to separate it all and bodge back onto replacement VCU

    IRD screwed? identify this noise

No, always chage the tyres at the same time, it has done 170k+ miles tho. Td4 removal looks to be a right pita

    IRD screwed? identify this noise

Hi, So just as we arrived home today we had an almighty racket from underneath the TD4 hippo. Started as a quiet thud in time with wheel speed but then started to sometimes be a loud bang. Happens in forward and reverse, clutch in or out, front wheels will turn ok when both jacked up. I...

td4 manual gearbox oil filler & drain plugs

nice hack - access is pretty tight though and I wanted to make sure of the exact right amount - 4 x 400ml squirts were very satisfying ;)

td4 manual gearbox oil filler & drain plugs

Happy to say screwdriver and hammer got the turn going and got it out. As an aside a Sealy AK54 oil syringe is the perfect tool to refill the box - would have been a nightmare without.

td4 manual gearbox oil filler & drain plugs

Access is a bit tight- I’ve ordered a set of stripped hex bolt removers may do the trick, otherwise that cut in the side looks hammer/chiselable

What have you done to your Freelander today

changed the IRD oil, then looked at the gearbox filler hex rounded to a perfect circle and groaned

td4 manual gearbox oil filler & drain plugs

and that's why we undo or try to undo the filler plug before hitting the drain. the person who got this TD4 gearbox filler plug out with a chisel and then put it back again will go to hell. or maybe it never came out. we will see once I've ordered a new one. grr.

    Td4 Lack of power at 70mph - fixed !

A tale with a happy ending that may help others.. Having had this problem in the past and fixing with new vacuum hoses (perished to hell) and new turbo solenoid, when the missus' hippo lost all oomph this week my heart sank. Cut back in again a couple of times but then stayed with about same...

Grinding noise from front at full lock/low speed

ah you probably mean on the subframe - the rest of it is not that bad - it'll last out the car I think ;)

Grinding noise from front at full lock/low speed

Got this sorted last week. It looks like it's been weeping oil v slowly for a while - not sure if there's anything to do about this without taking the whole unit out for refurb/seal and sounds expensive/maybe unnecessary. I went to remove fil plug first (obvs) and my heart sank when I saw...

Grinding noise from front at full lock/low speed

Thanks for the reply - Never AFAIK. One of those not on the service item list but should be done periodically things? I’ll try that first. Are the drain /fill plugs accessible without removing a ton of stuff?

Grinding noise from front at full lock/low speed

Just started in our TD4 MY01 - Lower wishbones and track rods have been replaced recently but been fine since. At low speeds when driving forward with full lock in either direction there's a ghastly grinding noise. When I was under it doing the wishbones the IRD looked a bit mucky and there...

Freelander 1 Tracking problems: need new track rod ends?

Great post Rob - about to do exactly the same as following replacing the lower suspension wishbone arms the tracking is now out, and of course the track rod adjusters are completely rusted up like yours. I even have an almost brand new wedgie separator that i needed for the wheel ball joint that...
