    gearbox or clutch, no drive

transfer box ok, turned the handbrake drum and I can feel big gear at the end of the TX box going round (overdrive off so I can put my hand in) time to buy clutch bits

    gearbox or clutch, no drive

ok, clutch is out and it is broken but not as much as I thought it would be. there are little springs toward the middle of the friction plate and they have metal parts that seem to go between them. On of the metal bits is broken in two and the bits are free to roam around by one end and several...

    gearbox or clutch, no drive

Good point, changing all the oils is probably a good idea, makes it lighter as well and since I'm moving I can save hauling gallons of gearbox oil with me, hell, maybe I'll do the axles as well ;-) Borrowing an engine hoist today to try moving the gearbox back. Will go into gear no probs with...

    gearbox or clutch, no drive

unfortunately the clutch sleeve looks pretty well perfect and the overdrive has drive through it from the inside to the outside gear so that seems ok. I guess that leaves the clutch, the gearbox or the transfer box. My money is on the clutch but who knows ;-0 Al.

    gearbox or clutch, no drive

the clutch centre is my guess as well, hopefully find out tonight. I hate taking gearboxes off. If it would move i'd prob take it to the landy garage but since it's stuck on my drive I have to get the spanners out. I guess if it isn't the clutch then at least I have the gearbox almost off anyway...

    gearbox or clutch, no drive

ok, driving along yesterday, no funny noises, thinking that the landy was going well. Changed from 2nd to 3rd and there was no drive at all. Pulled over, checked all the levers and no drive in any gear, low or high, 4WD or normal, free wheeling hubs in or out. There was no bang or noise when...

    tappet adjustment

thankyou, great pictures, can see exactly what I'm going to be doing now ;-) have adjusted the offending one slack which makes it run fine but it sounds like I have a deathwatch beetle under the bonnet. Keeps it useable until I get around to the proper fix though.

    tappet adjustment

ok, it's getting worse, quite often firing on 3 cylinders, I know it's the 3rd cylinder as when it's running badly I can pull the HT lead and it makes no difference. Is there any way to do anything to the tappet without taking the head off? Also if I have to take the head off do I need to...

    quality of distributors

I replaced my knackered looking dizzie with a new one from a well known landrover shop about 2 years ago. It ran better and used less fuel - excellent I thought. Landrover broke down on me on the way to work today after running a bit rough for a few weeks - thought it was prob the head gasket...

    Soundproofing your Series

the only think I ever found that made a difference was to go from a hard top to a soft top. The soft top is much quieter as you don't get all the echo, apart from that get ear plugs :) Someone before me had put sound proofing mat under the bonnet but it made no difference a looked like a fire...

    tappet adjustment

any ideas how to unstick it (pref without removing the cylinder head)?

    tappet adjustment

any suggestions on this? I have tried to adjust my valves loads of times using feeler guages, a clicky tool and the good old fasioned back it off a 1/5th of a turn from tight (which works the best of the 3 methods). I can get them all correct except 3 and 6. No matter how I adjust them I end...

    swb petrol wandering

they do wander a bit - always will. Check all the joints on the steering link. Get someone to sit inside moving the wheel left to right a bit, maybe 3 inches each way. While they are doing this go to each joint in turn and look/feel for any play. Check all the ball joints and all the fixings...
