Those two pictures were taken with an old Sony Mavica MVC-FD200, with a 2mp sensor. In one of those strange happenings, the Macro performance of that sensor and lens is far better than my bigger cameras. Peter

    age of LPG tanks

I changed mine at 12 years, they weren't bad but had some rust pitting outside. It's a bit of a grey area, my insurers didn't know either. Peter

Help needed please on v8 head bolts

When you say metal came out with the bolt, do you mean that the bolt tore the thread and dislodged material as you pulled it out, or that it just had minor traces of metal on the bolt? If the bolt was tight in and out, suggest you check the bolt itself for damage. Any bolt that doesn't spin...

    Turner Top Hat Short Engine

Running in is fairly important on these engines, I had a genuine Rover short engine in 2009 which I ran in carefully and still had the honing marks at 45k miles later. That didn't use much oil at all and ran on LPG (Discovery 2 V8, multipoint LPG) We have always used 10W-40 diesel engine oil. Peter

They are in the casting, not machined or punched. Needed to drain the valley area. The block is refurbished, not a new one, it retains its old number with an 'R' punched at the end. Peter

    Turner Top Hat Short Engine

The Rangie P38 we bought last year with a cooked engine is going to have a Turner Top Hat short motor, we have done 4500 miles since last July but it has very bad oil consumption. Turners have been excellent to deal with, the engine arrived in a snowstorm but was really well packaged and...

    Snapped handbrake cable

Rear propshaft and handbrake drum off, that gives you access to that end of the cable, the other end is on the handbrake lever. A dealer should be able to get the right cable against the chassis number. Peter

    Alternator for dual set up.

    Ifor Williams trailer

Ifor Williams flatbeds are great for general hauling, but their build makes the centre of gravity too high for comfortable car towing, especially the heavies like 109" Series and Discoveries. The wheel track is narrower than a car transporter, so your car load is high and balanced over a narrow...

ZF 4HP22 by memory, a very good box. The Vogue has the slightly larger 4HP24. Peter

    Towing advice V8 v TD5

When we go to Nuenen for the engine show, we are fully loaded, car and engine/living trailer, but there's still a reasonable return on mileage if you make the engine pull rather than rev its nuts off. I much prefer the 5-speed manual in the Discovery, but with the higher power of the Range Rover...

    Towing advice V8 v TD5

Both of our Discovery V8's are on Zavoli multipoint systems, and the Rangie Vogue will go on the same system after we've sorted the engine out (cooked by previous owner) LPG is good, mine has done 95k on gas, more before I bought it. We've been into Europe 7 times with it and had no issues...

    Towing advice V8 v TD5

Discovery 2 V8's, we have three, plus a Vogue 4.6. They are not so bad as folks make out, but the diesels are cheaper to run, if a little down on power for towing. One of our V8's is going to be up for sale, it's a low mileage 1999 GS manual, no ACE. That's 3500kg, and the extra power of...

    P38A Oil pump 4.6 thour

As Johnnyb70 alluded to above, the timing gears are identical in number of teeth between Thor and Gems engines, but the gears are easy to identify, GEMS has equal cutouts in the gear face, Thor has unequal shaped cutouts. Strangely enough, a Thor engine will run with a GEMS timing gear, but it...
