I finally bought a can of WD-40 and sprayed it on. The result is fantastic! The failure-to-lock problem has gone away. Where I sprayed: lock mechanism in trailing edge of open door; down past the door lock button (using the thin tube that comes with the WD-40); and on the lock post on the car body.

Some further information that might help somebody diagnose the problem: I've discovered that if I press HARD against the closed door in the region of the door lock (in the area where the key barrel is) before turning the key to lock it, then locking is always successful So this sounds to me like...
