You don't have to go onto the Plain there is plenty around the edge that is at least as interesting. Navigation is also easier off the Plain because there are more land marks and the MOD haven't added their own routes and tracks to confuse you at junctions :) As said above all the byways are...

If the box is 'complete' (has a transfer box on the back) then you need to swap the handbrake and speedo sender. Otherwise, as James says.

Not sure how you knew it was a Defender engine from the original post. I appreciate that the Disco and Def engine have a different bolt pattern, I had assumed that the TD/petrol engines where different again, apparently not :)
