    Excessive smoke MoT failure

Me again. I've ordered a service kit and a bottle of Diesel Magic. One more question... does it matter if I use the cleaner BEFORE replacing filters etc. or would you recommend doing the service first? Thanks.

    Excessive smoke MoT failure

Thanks very much everyone. Will buy some diesel cleaner and think about all this over Christmas!

    Excessive smoke MoT failure

The odometer says 213,000 or something like that but I believe this is the second or third engine since 1986 so I don’t think the number means much. I bought it in June and haven’t yet done a service. When you say “thorough clean through” do you mean with the diesel cleaner people have been...

    Excessive smoke MoT failure

Thanks! Will do that. Banham is an hour away. I’ll check out Glencoyne as well as Diesel Bob. Appreciate the suggestion.

    Excessive smoke MoT failure

Thanks. The failure certificate doesn’t have a number on it. I think maybe they just failed it on visible smoke. I’ve been aware of it smoking when I start the engine and on acceleration. I can look at the air filter. What would it mean if removing the air filter changed the smokiness? I think...

    Excessive smoke MoT failure

Hi, everyone. My 1986 110 (200TDi) has failed its MoT due to “emissions unable to be completed (excessive smoke)”. The garage that did the test said it could be anything from a diesel injector to a turbo problem to needing a new engine. They think it’s diesel smoke rather than oil. They’ve...

New knocking noise on 1986 110

Good news. The studs are fine. I’ve taken the wheel off today and checked everything and it’s running well now it’s back on. No damage to the threads. I checked the other wheels too. The other front wheel also hadn’t been refitted properly. The nuts were only part way on. Clearly the garage...

New knocking noise on 1986 110

Yes, I spoke to the garage owner yesterday and will be calling him again on Monday — but there’s no point in being angry here! I felt pretty stupid yesterday for not checking this as soon as I heard the noise but it never entered my head that the wheel wasn’t on right.

    New owner- old Landy

Hi. I'm only a few weeks ahead of you... I bought an 86 110 in June. I'm nowhere near Dorset so can't make recommendations but I wish you good luck!

    Thanks, that's good to know.

New knocking noise on 1986 110

Thanks. Fingers crossed that they just didn't do the nuts up properly.

New knocking noise on 1986 110

A quick update. The noise is nothing to do with the UJs. We realised today that the nearside front wheel is only held on by a single nut. All the other nuts were hanging at the end of the thread. Luckily the wheel hasn't fallen off yet. I've tried to tighten the nuts but there is something odd...

Thanks. I've just ordered the tool from eBay.

New knocking noise on 1986 110

Thanks. With the wheels chocked and the handbrake off, what exactly am I looking for, please? I think Haynes says that removing/refitting a prop shaft is a 'three spanners' level of difficulty. I'm not sure why it's that high -- it looks straightforward to me, as long as the bolts come out. Is...

    1986 110 -- rear/end door lock

Thanks. I’d say it’s more of a single THUNK than a click (or two clicks) but I will check again.

New knocking noise on 1986 110

My 1986 110 has lots of noises but there is a new one that sounds worrying. I’d call it knocking but some people might say clonking. I’m pretty sure it’s NOT the engine. I can’t figure out where it’s coming from but it’s linked to road speed not engine speed. At 30mph with the clutch in, it’s...

    1986 110 -- rear/end door lock

Thanks. Sorry for the slow reply — I’ve been away. I think it’s latching properly. There’s a flat plate that springs up when you close the door. It’s going all the way up. And lifting the door handle retracts the plate and resets the trigger. The problem is that turning the lock doesn’t stop...
