I had that with a Discovery. Every time the pads nipped the disc, they rotated forward slightly casuing a knocking sound. You could literally grab the pads and shake them about in the holders!!!!

Test drove an X reg TD4. All seemed great, smooth power, no cloncks, bangs or whistles and checked all the vcu was in place. BUT, I noticed when sat with the engine running and drivers door open when I pressed the clutch all was quiet, when I released it (in neutral) there was a slight noise...

...... did the IRD's start to have different gearing to reduce transmission wind up? I've been advised that "later" models had the gearing changed in the IRD's to help prevent the VCU problems but what is classed as "later"?? I'm after a 2000 TD4 but may get newer if there's less chnace of the...

It's because your vehicle was registered AFTER March 2001. Prior to that a manual TD4 should be about 185 for the year. Your vehicle is a band F under the new system. But next year it'll be moved to a band J so a big hike unfortunately!!!! I stand to be corrected (and no doubt will be!) but...

Only new to this but have read somewhere about some kind of cam sensor that can affect starting but think it's only when warm. One way to test it is to take it off and put it in the freezer for a while, then try again!!!! As I say though, think it's only for warm start probs...

OK, I might be looking at a TD4 soon, probably around X reg. I already know how to check for VCU problems by driving in tight turns at low speeds and also about generally listening for clunks, drones and whines that might point at diffs / ird's. But what else should I look out for? I've tried...

Hi y'all, New to the forum.. Had a 300TDI Disco before (and loved every minute other than those spent at the diesle pumps!) but I'm now toying with the idea of getting a TD4 Freelander. It would be manual, around 2000 / 2001 and not bothered whether 3 or 5 door. Already done a bit of reading...
