Thanks, the gearbox is a R380, so Disco 1 about 1991 year. It has a weird star insert, so something like a star shaped allen key seems favourite. I have been able to find the actual filler level plug, but no actual tool to get it out with. Look forward to hearing from you.

Can anyone tell me what size the star socket is for the gearbox fill level plug on Discover 1 gearbox?

Thanks for all the replies, we were having to re-furb the newer engine as the engine in our landie tried to die on us. After new plugs, checking for milky oil, it turned out to be the coil. Had a spare from the donor Discovery, so voila, landie back up and running. So, engine rebuild not so...

Wonder if anyone has had this problem. We bought an N reg Discovery1 to have the V8 engine as a spare for our Defender, which someone has already put a V8 in, with gearbox etc. When hubby was cleaning it to find the engine number, he couldn't find one. But there is a Landrover Plate on it...
