P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

And quite rightly so. If it hadn't triggered an error I would still be driving around with my brake lights on! The p38's seem to be very well thought out.

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

How do you reset the switch? I fiddled around with it for a while but couldn't figure out a way to do it. I stopped at opening it up as I wanted to make sure I had the brake lights working over xmas. Do I need to be braver?

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

OK, so a post-fix update/lesson learned. After a couple of days driving around I started up the car one day to find the ABS and traction control lights remained on. This prompted some checks where I noticed that the brake lights were on regardless of the brake pedal being depressed on or not...

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello, A couple of photos attached showing the top and bottom of the cylinders. The springs in the bottom photo have the corrosion on them & when opened up that's where all the sludge was.

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello All, So when I say master cylinder I mean the big thing with a reservoir on top that's not the ABS pump. I think the correct term for the unit is ABS modulator. I took the old one apart today and what I found was the 2 master cylinders that feed the brakes have springs underneath them to...

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello All, So got it sorted, it was the master cylinder. The pedal travel was the thing that bothered me and everything else seemed to check out. I spoke to a friend who has done some car dealing that asked around for me. His sources said that issues with a valve in the pump unit were common...

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello All, A quick update. Blocked bleed nipples was a great idea, unfortunately both are clear & can blow through them. When bleeding I followed the rave so: 1. Depressurised 2. Bled at the front bleed screw on the master cylinder 3. "Bled" the front calipers. This is where no fluid came...

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello All, Thanks for all the advice, I did look at the eazibleed however I think there is truth in that getting an assistant on the case is the easiest way to do the job. So on my case I got my assistant to run through the RAVE brake bleeding procedure with me. All looked OK on the first...

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello, I have not changed the master cylinder and hoping this won't be necessary however I have one to hand if needed. It's the brake pedal travel that is making me wonder if the master cylinder is knackered as there doesn't seem to be much and I am pretty sure that the ABS pump and sphere are...

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello, Yes, I can hear the pump running and cutting out once pressure is built up. I also see the fluid level come down a bit in the reservoir as the pump builds up the pressure. Interestingly the replacement one is much quieter, the old one was much more rattly.

P38A Braking System Problem on P38a - Pedal Travel Question and What to do Next?

Hello, Looking for advice with braking issues on my P38a, Its a 1998 GEMS V8 A couple of weeks ago the brakes went weak, they barely stop the car. Having had a look at the threads I bought a master cylinder & ABS pump that were bundled together on e-bay. I have swapped over the ABS pump &...
