    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Hey, Thanks for all the help - I'm delighted to say that I'm back up and running :D So I tried the new solenoid a few different ways but actually leaving that spare upper spade connector free seems to have done the trick and just connected the wires I had on the previous solenoid. She turns...

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

You are absolutely correct Mega, I've attached a photo of the old wired solenoid. Browns from those male spades. Okay so I think the old solenoid took the earth from being bolted on but for this one I will need to make a new earth and connect to that upper male spade? That raises another...

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Hello again, Sorry for the silence, since I made this post I have been waiting on the cables arriving - which they did today!! Woo! But looking at the new solenoid I have put the two old male spade connectors from the original onto the battery side but it looks like I have an extra male spade...

    Brake light electrical issue

Thanks Mega, No that was just me that twisted them to test after cutting away the corroded trailer wire. Would I need to connect the earth up to four wires you see there? They do go into the back of the rear lights and they are earthed there.

    Brake light electrical issue

Thanks for the advice! Maybe it is the earth, I don't know it you can see in the photo there was an earth which I think was for the trailer, but maybe I somehow need to reconnect it

    Brake light electrical issue

Thanks for the advice, I went and got a multimeter and followed the wire, do you know where it goes after it goes behind the dash? Thanks again!

    Brake light electrical issue

Hi there, My brake lights stop working the other day and I went under to see what the issue was. There was a number of corroded wires underneath (at rear right of car). A previous owner had installed a plug for a trailer but these had all corroded so I cut them back and reconnected (albeit just...

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Thanks for the reply ExMil109! I think the deeper I dive into the landy the more electrics I'm going to replace. I've ordered a new cable: https://www.autosparks.co.uk/bc301-land-rover-series-3-battery-to-solenoid-lead.html And I've also ordered a new Solenoid to Starter cable from the same...

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Thanks for the reply Mystery, I will get brass washers and nuts but I've already ordered this cable: https://www.autosparks.co.uk/bc301-land-rover-series-3-battery-to-solenoid-lead.html So I'm hoping that should be okay?

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Thank you Rynner, I definitely don't want that! I have already bought a fire extinguisher for the car but before reading your comment I already purchased this cable: https://www.autosparks.co.uk/bc301-land-rover-series-3-battery-to-solenoid-lead.html Do you think it will suffice? Thanks, Scott

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Hi Blackburn, thanks for replying and great photo! Yes that's exactly right the yellow/green lead is the live from the battery. As a starter for 10 I will take them off and clean them up - can I then use heatshrink on those cables or is that not advisable? Thanks again, Scott

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Hi Europa, thanks for replying - I think I see what you mean, so the blackening on the attached picture is because of the arcing? If so I will replace solenoid and do I need to replace the cables or just get new insulation for them? Thanks again, Scott

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Hi Flossie, thanks for replying - yes that's exactly right the yellow/green lead is the live from the battery. It seems to only be smoking when cranking. Thanks again, Scott

    Series 3 Smoke from Solenoid

Hello, My name is Scott and after a childhood of reading LRMonthly I've managed to acquire a lovely Series 3 2.25 petrol. So trying to learn as much as I can on the cuff, the previous owner had wired in a couple of aftermarket dials from the solenoid which I removed to take it back to its...
