    Thanks, gents. I took the parking brake apart and found that part of the spring assembly / tensioner (which I hadn't removed) had self-destructed. So it was exactly what it sounded like - a bunch of metal pieces bouncing around in a metal housing. This does not fix my transfer case problem...
