Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Got it figured. Or, well, at least I have power again. Loosened up, wiggled about and re-tightened all larger connections. Won't start with the battery that low, but everything seems to be good otherwise :)

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Linguistics aside, I finally had the time to check the earth points and replace that HB cable. The original cable had indeed melted near the brake drum. New cable fitted, and the brake works nicely. The earths were also in better condition than I presumed, and I got them nice and clean with some...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Why thank you  This is so far removed from the actual topic, but what the hell :D Finnish language teaching is pretty heavily inclined towards grammar and vocabulary, so I guess it just gets drilled into people from a fairly young age. Of course we also get plenty of UK and US TV shows...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

I had a gander under the bonnet and I see what you mean. What I'm seeing on sale is a flexi hose with connectors on both ends. However, on my Landy it seems the piping runs directly from the master cylinder to the slave, bypassing the damper altogether (see attached). There is a bit of red...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Cheers! I've been going through the RAVE stuff on my own, but it's all been a bit overwhelming. But I'm learning something new everyday, it's all part of the experience :)

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

I have a new HB cable coming in the mail, so that's sorted. I'm also getting quite a few hits on searching for the clutch hose online. Not original parts, but still. We are talking about the flexible hose and not the piping, right? It's totally possible the prop's been refitted the wrong way...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Mine's a LHD, but I'll have a look at the wing on the battery side. The imgur link above should open to a gallery of pics I took last night, shows the the two earths I found and the melting damage etc.

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Makes perfect sense, I'll don my dunce cap :D I don't remember the diff lock warning ever working, to be honest. And the handbrake on switch is next to the handbrake handle in the cabin, that one I found and figured out earlier.

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Finally had time to do a bit of digging and crawling last night. Under the bonnet things seem more or less ok. To begin with, I'm not seeing any leaks anywhere, and the fluid in the clutch and brake reservoirs looks clean and the level is correct. The clutch pipe has obviously been quite hot...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

I'm still pretty puzzled by the clutch issue as well, haven't had time yet to check anything. However, could possible air in the hydraulic fluid react to the heat of the fire and result in something like this? Once I got the Disco back home, the clutch seemed to work completely normally again, I...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Wow, thank you all for these responses :) Makes it so much easier for me to figure out what happened. I was pretty shaken and almost certain something had gone wrong in a big way in the powertrain or something as it all happened, but it seems I'll get away with getting a new HB cable and...

Disco 1 Fire on top of the gearbox

Brand new, first time Landy owner here. Bought a '93 Disco 1 a week ago, been running ok despite being somewhat beat up (drove it home some 100 miles without issue etc.). Yesterday, however, I ran into a big problem. I was driving home and noticed I was trailing some smoke and caught a whiff...
