    Which is the best tyre

The ranger was of course fitted to the series and I doubt you'd be able to get them now. On the other hand the up to date rangemaster are radial and have a higher load rating which suits the 3.5t defenders. If you were looking for originality the above may look better?

    Which is the best tyre

If its original pattern tyres I think it was Avon ranger in 750.16. I can't remember the make/model of the 205.16 range rover tyre but the land rover tyre was cross ply. I have driven both over the years and think they are very different their original form. I would choose the radial over...

Where are all the ex MOD tyres now.

That's a good point they're not dreadful money. But where is all the old military stock? As said a Google search has turned up virtually nothing in 750x16.

Where are all the ex MOD tyres now.

You used to be able to buy a very presentable set of used mod Michelin Xcl's, or Goodyear extra grip tyres before that. I believe the military have been using various Goodyear's and Michelin's so who are the vendors for all the usable cast offs now? Vass in ampthill don't list them on their...

Thanks for all your replies. Talking to some gearbox specialists at the moment. I'll update when I get somewhere with this.

Do you think down gearing would be money well spent?

    R380 box. Looking a for lower 1st.

Thanks for the response I tow construction plant and the trailer rarely weighs much under 3.5t. Add people, onboard diesel bowser, tools, materials and equipment in the vehicle. Its not overloaded but definitely well loaded. Some of the hills round the Stroud valleys in particular can be...

    R380 box. Looking a for lower 1st.

Yes that's what I'm currently doing and thinking this will be the outcome. I think it's worth enquiring though.

    Hi

Hi I would expect everything will need looking at on a golden oldie like that. I would start with chassis and bulkhead but my true opinion is if you love it that much just expect to repair or renovate everything. I don't know what parts availability is like for series now but for me its a labour...

    R380 box. Looking a for lower 1st.

I should add that I have asked Ashcroft's but they don't do this. The answer was a bit teccy so I didn't understand exactly but the bottom line is they don't do it.

    R380 box. Looking a for lower 1st.

Hi yes thanks for that it's had a stage 1 tune up producing approx 160 bhp. It pulls very well on the motorways, similar to a land cruiser Amazon I once hired. The tuning guy told me I could go for a variable vane turbo and other associated upgrades but he couldn't guarantee me enough low down...

    R380 box. Looking a for lower 1st.

As above I realise gearbox conversions are not straight forward. My R380 is coming to the end of its life due to a lot of heavy towing. 5th gear is getting excessively noisy when under load. I want to achieve a lower 1st and possible 2nd gear to make stop start driving in hilly areas a little...

Other Be careful what yer tow

I actually tried this years ago on a quiet road. At the time we had a 90 and a badly mismatched livestock trailer, the trailer hitch being several inches to high for the car. I forget what the load consisted of, probably hay or something similar, but the loaded trailer would un-weight the back...

    Hi all

Hi you might guess what I drive from my user name. I use my landy for towing plant, machinery and building sundries in the south west UK. I've owned various series/range rovers for well over 30 years but these days spend a little less time tinkering. I've gone jap for a few years so I know what...
