    Defender TD5 starter motor removal/replacement

Top tip. My upper 15mm a/f nut had been rounded off by the last person to change the starter motor. They were good enough to reuse it so I had no chance of getting a socket on it. I did manage to get an 18” cold chisel on it from the top though. With no damage to the stud luckily.

    Headlights cutting out.

Final update hopefully. I found this light relay getting hot. When wiggled the light would go out. Finally the culprit!

    Headlights cutting out.

Update. I found a cooked low beam fuse holder and melted fuse. Cleaned it up and replaced the fuse. Seems to have gone it. Odd that it knocked them both out intermittently. Let’s see how it goes.

    Headlights cutting out.

Nothing by the look of it. The issues seems to be in the original wiring of my truck. I’ll be looking at the main switch first.

Thanks. That rings a bell, think I bridged my relay out years ago.

    Headlights cutting out.

It’s a 2004 Td5 defender 110dc. I had a harness and relay taking the headlight feed straight from the alternator, I’ve removed that now but still an issue.

    Headlights cutting out.

Just a quick question please. For years my headlights have been a bit hesitant to come on sometimes, now they cut our for 20 seconds or so now and again when driving. It's just the headlights, side and dash come on immediately and stay on. I assume it's the relay I have to change. Just checking...

    36mpg!

So average over the last 4 tanks is now 33.5 mpg

    36mpg!

The disco2 transfer box is the key. 2004 110 double cab. The high ratio disco box is the key. It drops the revs right down in 5th.

    36mpg!

Two subsequent t tanks have given 32 and 33.5 mpg. Pretty good eh :)

    36mpg!

Yep. I used to get 33 at a push on my commute but that was hilly. High ratio transfer box is the key, it’s like having another gear.

    36mpg!

So I’ve been driving more sensibly since the fuel price rocketed. Last tank average was 36 mpg. not bad for a 110 TD5. The disco transfer box has made all the difference.

Td5 Air issue in the fuel system

I had those exact symptoms for ages! I replaced fuel lines, pump, injector seals…. It turned out to be a blocked fuel filter! Cheap and easy place to start.

    Wooden brakes

I’m comparing with my previous defenders. I replaced discs callipers and pads… kicking myself for not diagnosing then servo failure, but I was led astray by the seized pistons that I freed off a couple of years ago. I’d I start the engine with my foot on the brake there is no difference in feel...
