    My 4.6 V8 build

Cheers. Almost forgot that no engine thread would be complete without an exhaust vid. ;)

    A better v8 projects?

Yes there are - old tooling on the later engines and a slightly higher state of tune don't help. But a lack support behind the liner is the main issue IMO If you want a relatively trouble free RV8 you'd be better off sticking to a 3.5Ltr, or budgeting for tophat liners in anything 3.9+

    My 4.6 V8 build

Cheers guys, forgot to follow this up TBH. So anyway. It was finally time to put it back in the hole. New rad and thermostat Fitted. On Mark Adams' recommendation, I got a new Bosch AFM for a 4.6 P38 range rover to match the new mapping. It's slightly larger than the standard...

    A better v8 projects?

You do know the 3.9 and 4.2ltr are just as likely to suffer liner issues as they share the same 94mm bore size.

    My 4.6 V8 build

Cheers guys. On with the rebuild. First job was to get the heads fitted with new elring composite gaskets. Torquing them up was nerve racking as there is a lot of stories on the net about the threads pulling out of the aluminium block when using studs. Some people say the 80lb-ft torque...

    My 4.6 V8 build

Another update for you guys. sorry for the wait, depends when I get time to put the pics in order. Anyway, big one this time :) Before I could start building, I needed to get on with de-ringing and cleaning up the old pistons so they could be reused with the 4.6 rods. Then my 4.6 crank...

    My 4.6 V8 build

Started off by getting the block on my stand and removing all the casting flash. Basically the raged edges left from the casting process. Before: After: Highly unlikely to have caused any issues (hence why it's not removed at the factory) but I couldn't put up with knowing it's there...

    My 4.6 V8 build

First job was to strip the old engine down And then a trip to Surrey to swap the block for a fresh one fitted with top hat liners  Along with a box of rebuild goodies :D More to come....

    My 4.6 V8 build

Hi guys, thought I'd put some pictures of my V8 build here. All started with a top end tap on the 4.0ltr Thor in my Discovery 2. Turned out one of the thrust pads on the rockers had gone walkies and the corresponding valve stem had been trashed. With the heads coming off and the engine already...

    Serpentine belt

There are 4 different belts as the D2 could be speced with or without ace and A/C. With ACE, with aircon..................ERR6896 With ACE, no aircon.....................ERR 6897 Without ACE, with aircon.............ERR 6898 Without ACE, without aircon.......ERR 6899 Removing ACE does...

    Jordan's Discos. TD5 and V8.

Another update for you guys, big one this time :) So yesterday morning I was still waiting for my new crank to arrive. To that end I decided to get on with de-ringing and cleaning up the old pistons so they could be reused with the 4.6 rods. Then it came, definatly the right one...

    Jordan's Discos. TD5 and V8.

Alright guys, had a good days progress today :D Started off by getting the block on my stand and removing all the casting flash. Basically the raged edges left from the casting process. Before: After: Highly unlikely to have caused any issues (hence why it's not...

3.9i V8 Range Rover loosing coolant?

You may :) It's not a supply to the inlet manifold as such. More of a junction. The hot coolant comes out of both heads and meets in the manifold. It then leaves via 3 outlets; > to the rad and thermostat > to the interior heater matrix > to the throttle body heater The coolant temperature...

    Jordan's Discos. TD5 and V8.

So unfortunately there was a bit of a setback this week. I picked up the new block on Monday, and as I said the plan is to stroke it to 4.6ltrs using a p38 crank and rods. To that end I bought a donor engine which turned up by pallet Wednesday........ Lifted it off of the pallet and...

    Jordan's Discos. TD5 and V8.

Update time..... Some may already know from Facebook but since finding the recent engine issues I did some thinking. After a long chat with the wife which I'm sure included the word "investment" I've decided to bite the bullet and go for a full rebuild including upping the power a bit. :D...

Double checking main and rod bearing clearance figures

Alright guys, just want a sanity check here. I'm going to be building up a new 4.6ltr Thor engine for the Disco when I pick up the new block from Turner next week. Just checking parts and specs and have come across a difference regarding what the crank bearing clearances should be. The...

    Jordan's Discos. TD5 and V8.

So from a day that went well, to a day that didn't go quite so well....... Decided while I'm doing engine work I'd sort the weaping rocker cover seals and also to look into a light top end ticking under load. Covers off, engine has led a hard life by the looks of it. Rocker shafts and push...

    Jordan's Discos. TD5 and V8.

Another update here. So the new Discovery already had an LPG system fitted and working, great stuff. What you probably won't find surprising is that the fittment wasn't nearly upto the standard I'd want. * long pipes after the injectors * poor placement of LPG nozzles *...

    Gems vs Thor interchangeable parts.

My tapping was from rocker failure. In the pic below you can see where the steel thrust pad has fallen off and the valve has worn into the softer alloy rocker. MartynV8's liner tap however was indeed a liner moving up and down in the bore. This pic from his other thread shows where the...

Big end bearings - what to do, what to do?

Sump of, shells out, check condition of the crank. My decision would be based on the result of that.
