Had this problem in the last few days with the cold snap Mine was down to poor earth - started just fine with jump lead from negative battery terminal to engine block Very easy to check I would advise trying this first before replacing anything

Exciter wire = wire from ignition to solenoid on top of the starter which excites the starter

Hi Guys '97 300tdi 90 is the truck - had it about 3 months and always had a rather annoying metallic resonating noise from engine bay when pootling about at about 30 mpg in a low gear. Definite resonance as any slow or faster it goes completely. Hard to track as cannot get it to make noise...

HI - do you mean missing teeth on the flywheel - or on the new starter motor ?

No - previously started just clicked and did not turn Now starter consistently clicks and turns - but has started to gear grind (presumably starter not fully engaging with flywheel) and then if you try to turn from position II to position III (without going all the way back to ignition off)...

A can safely say driving around for 500 miles with litgle or no vacuum asdist in my 300 tdi was quite an eye opening experience. I did not ha e to do any other leg exercises for a few weeks after and some white knuckle moments I would not adise it .... But if you must try it by disclknecying...
