I had the same problem, more so going up long hills on the motorway. I would have to keep stopping on the hard shoulder turn the engine off restart and it would fix the problem till the the next long hill. Got the turbo rebuilt and it’s been fine ever since....

And both are water soluble so easy to wash away.....

Cheap option is engine Gunk from Halfords but need to let it soak for a while, might have to use a scrubbing brush 2nd option a little expensive but it’s worked for me is Loctite 7840 cleaner degreaser..

Have u tried starting it on easy start being sprayed into the carb??? Or pour some neat fuel directly into the carburettor and crank it over....

On my new petrol tank fitted many years ago the paint was just about a micron thick so sprayed what I could with chassis paint then warmed up some Blk waxoil in a big plastic tub so it was supper thin capped all the opening’s on the tank and dipped the hole thing into it. It’s never rusted....

Thanks for the info as per your post this is what I did and it’s running very smoothly, even got rid of most of the back lash in the drive train.... When the timing was out it clonked & banged like a right old donkey..... Thanks for the help much appreciated :-)

Forget that, coil connection is ok. Anyone know what turns the fuel pump on to prime the fuel system at the first part of the turn of the ignition key.... ? The feed to the fuel pump is completely dead... Negative is ok and grounded to the chassis....

Done some investigation on the old interweb and the fuel pump issue not starting up on the 1st part of the turn of the key might be due to a bad connection from the negative side of the coil that tells the ECU to turn the fuel pump on. Can’t see how this would effect the pump but it’s a start...

That’s what I did, set it at 6 degrees with the strobe then drove it got it running perfect with adjusting the dizzy and marked it with tipX. It reads 10 deg with strobe but I reckon the marks are out on pulley.
