    Testing a starter motor

Engine is rebuilt after my, ahem, clever driving through a river plan I think my starter motor is toast. I’ve checked it my connecting it to a car battery with jump leads then used a power supply to the solenoid. The solenoid clicks and the toothed wheel tries to Move but doesn’t. ****ed...

    Flywheel run out 200tdi

Thanks everyone. Decided to just replace it. It’s pretty old and rusted anyhow. Turners sent a refurb once that is now very nice a shiny

    Flywheel run out 200tdi

That's a good point - maybe although the part of the fly wheel that has more run out is the same every rotation if you get me and across a largish fraction of the wheel which makes me think its not the crank play I'll double check tho If it is the wheel, need a new one/get it skimmed?

Yeh gave them a good clean.

    Flywheel run out 200tdi

I think it's the original fly wheel. I measured with a DTI gauge like a good boy

    Flywheel run out 200tdi

Almost finished the engine rebuild after flooding the engine during a river crossing. Measured the run out of the fly wheel and its 0.15mm (max is meant to be 0.07mm). Is this a major problem? It's a 200tdi so I was just going to spit on it and stick it back on?

Hydro-****ed - what happens when you drive through the Spey in spate

Haha if only mate. Haven’t even got the engine out. It’s coming out this weekend… it’s completely seized so I’ll be interested to see what’s what.

Hydro-****ed - what happens when you drive through the Spey in spate

That’s helpful mate. Don’t worry the doom is well realised. The engine is completely seized. It’s coming out this weekend and I’ll probably rebuild it completely. Might leave the cam shaft alone as I’m not set up to reem new bearings.

    200tdi clutch slip

As above it needs a little bit of play before the pedel engages the hydraulics, otherwise the clutch is always slightly disengaged and can slip, especially when warm

Luckily this one is easier to fix…

@marjon @Hicap phill The water has really ruined the cashmere interior and I probably shouldn’t have kept my collection of first editions in the footwell.

You can see the water level in the lights. Woeful estimation of depth by me. There was a sudden dip that I’d not accounted for/couldn't see.

Hydro-****ed - what happens when you drive through the Spey in spate

That’s good to hear. Never had an issue with their work. Just had a very odd interaction with a woman, who I assumed was his wife, or one of the managers. Anyhow we’re lucky to have people like that with such skills and experience.

Hydro-****ed - what happens when you drive through the Spey in spate

Nice one mate. I might take you up on that. I was looking at the refurbed parts on turner engineerings website but that would be even better. I’ve had stuff from them before and they’re good. Didn’t particularly like dealing with the company tho, they were a bit odd

That makes sense. Thanks pal. Is there a way to measure the piston heights to check without having to take the bottom end apart?

I’d be happy if it was just a head rebuild. Although why would the valves and push rods suffer if there was water in the piston on the compression stroke wouldn’t this be against closed valves?

They are hard as a coffin nail. Good shout, I guessed I’d need a new set of con rods and pistons at the very least. I was hoping to avoid a new crank… With a streak of sheer genius I took the snorkel off a couple of years ago.
