    Movement in bulkhead when turning

As the pedal box is moving the whole bulkhead has to be moving, have a look where it mounts to the chassis out riggers.

Trashed s3 109 got me home. Now what?

Rear diff soldered ? If you have both wheels off the ground and in gear/hand brake on you should be able to turn both wheels. This is because the diff will be doing its job.[one on the other side goes in reverse] If out of gear hand brake off and you spin a wheel either the other wheel turns as...

Trashed s3 109 got me home. Now what?

Half shafts are of fully floating type so some movement expected although there is usually a shim washer between hub and circlip.

Trashed s3 109 got me home. Now what?

The oily mess all over the box may well have blown back from the engine bay. You need to do a good clean up/pressure wash. Can see an oil dribble from the selector area. there are seals on those shafts that can be replaced, just a few bolts to remove but one has to be careful about not dropping...

Trashed s3 109 got me home. Now what?

Likely not had any oil changes for ages. Nice thing with a series is gearbox, transfer box and axles all use the same 80/90 gear oil.

    Gears won’t engage….

Been blead of late so that is good. Try the release the pipe thing and if pedal goes down good. Next is to remove gear tunnel and have a look at what is going on with the slave cylinder. when you get that far come back.

    Rusty wheel nuts & studs

Some military units used to paint them pretty colours each time they had been off and on. :)

    Gears won’t engage….

Up on stands even in gear wheels will still turn because diffs will be doing their thing. It will not go into gear because the clutch is not working. As pedal is not going down there is a good chance the problem is with the clutch master cylinder, pipework, slave cylinder. Can be issue with...

200Tdi - Slave Cylinder Rod Clip

Better with the clip but can work without but there is a chance it may escape. All you need is a short length of a stiff pipe, I have used a bit of blue alkathene water pipe. Place clip on the rod and then slip on the pipe, needs to hold the clip tight at its end while leaving enough rod...

    Series 3 tow bar

Probably had to remove most the front end to replace the headlamp!

Trashed s3 109 got me home. Now what?

I agree with the chaps above regarding repairs. Do not be tempted with doing a complete strip down overhaul unless this is really your thing, so many are never finished. Keep as a rolling restoration and enjoy each fix/improvement done as you use it.

    Exhaust Fumes Rag Top

Pretty much so, had to drive my hard top with no rear door for a while as it was under repair. I did put a spare tail gate on but fumes came in. Best one can do is have the bulkhead flaps open to have a through flow of air. Other rag toppers may have different solutions.

    Oil in rear wheel bearings....

With a 1989 model that is how it should be. The gear oil is shared from the diff like the series landys. If you are changing say a hub seal then a smear of grease on the bearings to keep them happy until more oil migrates from the diff [keep diff topped if you have had an oil leak.] A better...

Trashed s3 109 got me home. Now what?

Well looks like it has worked pretty hard for over 40 years. But they are about the most basic motor vehicle that are still around in numbers today and can be repaired without the need to ask a computer what the problem is. A sticky brake may be the issue with the steering. A change of fluid...

    Suspension recommendations

Many moons ago I made the mistake of fitting HD springs on my Ninety. After a fortnight decided I would like my back to last a good while longer and went back to standard. Someone I knew fitted his landy with early Range Rover springs and it rode smooth but rather boat ish in the corners.

    Defender new buyer

My other bug bear other than the no return on thread is the ones with a problem which several of us here give good similar advice on how to sort but the still go off down their own road on what they think the issue is and coming back again with more daft ideas.

    Pimp My Ride

Very nice. Those little tractors and often their Land Girl drivers did much to keep Britain from starving in WW2. Neighboring farm still used one in the 60's. I drove it some as a youngster and had to stand both feet on the combined clutch/brake to get it going/stopped.

    Spark plugs

You may think that your engine is running rich but white deposits are the result of running lean. If it were running rich they would have black deposits on the plugs. A nice light brown is what there should be on the electrodes. A Gunson colortune is a simple to use tool to set up older...
