black smoke normal? it's smokeless when idling... and small blue/white puffs when changing gear or decelerating.

Quick update. Changed the lift pump as I had one and put the injectors back on. Took the car for a road test and did some pump timing tuning on the road side. Blue/white smoke now gone, more power but a little black smoke on acceleration, maybe I've been too far with timing...?

I measured the bore and it is the same so the shroud must broken, and I suspect the broken piece in the hotspot is disturbing the ignition, but I can't get it out. Anyways, I drove the car for a few miles and it doesn't smoke at all when driven, only when slowing down and idling (a lot then)...

the spare set has been test by CJ Diesel and deemed ok. looks like I 'll have to rake the head of now, shroud are very tight, so need to tap from the other side. Will give a me a chance to check other stuff and change gasket and valve seals I guess...

now interestingly and worryingly, it seem that the bore in the missing Cyl is the same depth and diameter as the bore with the correct shoulder... which leads me to believe that only the top of the shroud if missing or broken off. see pictures from Cyl 3 (ok) and Cyl 4 (faulty). I guess I will...

thank you Adrian, Another injector had the steel washer missing too, so with both fault it could explain for the smoke and bad running. Does that top hat fit from the top of the head or from the piston side?

only one flange/seat visible, the larger one where the copper washer seats.

thank you. I am familiar with the instalation arrangement, and have just change three injectors and both their steel and copper washers. the 4th one however doesn't have a seat in the very bottom of the hole for the steel washer/end of injector to seat on. my question was is there a separate...

there was a coper, but there is no seat for the small steel washer! it's just a hole....

so I was in the process of changing the injectors, and found that there is no bottom 'seat' in cal 4 (where the steel washer seats. what happened there? is that part of the hot spot? has it moved?

well the smoke definitely stinks of diesel but it's kind of blueish

did all that, changed chain etc. timing is now spot on. a little play on drive gear but not too bad. did the butterfly test last night, no major difference.
