Heaters in 1960s cars? You having a laugh?? My 1948 P3 hd one come to think of it and a curtain that dropped down inside the back window. My Rover 2000 had a heater as well, all mod-cons. I'll look on youtube, cheers. Otherwise Ranco valves on 1960s buses.

I took the easier but dearer way out and let a local garage do the job. They also replaced the thermostat and housing. The other isse was an O ring inside one of the plastic adaptors in the "octopus" pipes, not available separatelt, the whole assembly was in excess of £500. I found a right size...

Vacuum gauges start at zero and go downwards. they usually go anti-clockwise as well. some of the old stuff I work on have vacuum brakes, vacuum measured in inches of mercury.

Yes, you're right, it's just that some gauges I have aren't set a zero ATM! I know 1 bar is about 16, so near enough fr a guess. One of the posts above says water pressure is 16 psi, that's quite high for a car engine. Some modern buses run at that pressure.

Depends on your gauge, 0=1 bar; 0 psi actual is a vacuum. So your water pressure is maybe 4 psi + 16 psi. Sounds daft but i know what I mean! An oil gauge on one of my buses sits at 16 psi when disconnected as it's reading atmospheric pressure.

Maybe disconnect the car battery if you can get inside to open the bonnet. Leave it to reset and try again. Or call home recovery service if you have one.

Re the gearbox, you may well find the problem improves with an oil and filter change. there's always a bit of s h1te in an auto box as the parts naturally wear. The internal valves work to very fine tolerances.

Took the car back to the garage yesterday as it told me there was too much oil. the garage man took about half a litre our, problem solved, and topped up the anti-freeze. The temperature works as it ought to, up to half-way/nromal in a short space of time. Money well spent methinks. Next big job...

Yep, that's the stuff, excellent on a wet brush. I use it when I'm fitting windows in old buses as well.

Use tyre paste when refitting airbags, like other rubber lubrication products, it helps things slide in easier. :)

The problem I notice now is there seems to be restricted air flow to the footwell from the heater matrix. It's good to the face-level outlets and the screen, but my feet need to get warm! Presumably there's a flap somewhere that will need some attention? Any ideas?
