I have an EDC Auto that is usually a bastard to start of a morning, until I bothered to get a new battery that is, but if yours is EDC have you tried the method described in the handbook of fully depressing the accelerator pedal on start up as this apparently aids cold starting

A previous disco of mine was exactly the same, if you look at the gutter going over the rear door and around both rear corners of the car its 2 pieces pressed together, I found sealing this up stopped the leak, then the rusty mess you see there got dry enough to be treated and filled

I've had both, currently on a 97 EDC Auto and it is much much nicer to drive than the manual, smoother and quicker. Also it seems the gearbox has been kinder over the years to the various engine mounts and bushes as there is hardly any backlash making progress very smoothly, the manual however...

I get between 21 and 24 with an EDC auto, had 31 on a run to Wales but most of my journeys are short stop starts never getting upto temperature.

Used to have a 300tdi with ABS, one I have now doesn't have it and is by far easier to stop in the snow, having said that I rarely use the brakes, trying to engine brake as much as possible
