I have a 1994 300tdi defender 90 with the r380 gearbox etc. if I wanted a rear PTO so as to power towed farm equipment, what would I need to make a PTO at the rear of my landy? Is there some bolt on thing that would come off the gearbox side of the transfer box (I.e. so I could power the PTO...

I think I'd more likely be checking for a drain somewhere. If it wasn't charging, you'd be having problems even on the days you use it back to back. Alternator is an expensive fix for it to turn out to be something else.

How much current are we talking about?

Fused ign live should be solid purple wire. Do you have any spare fuses? Don't like to contradict ginger beard, but 10 amp is more appropirate, as the sockets themselves are usually rated at around 16 amp. Also, coming off the battery will mean its perminent on.

I'd suspect the starter relay is sticking. It should be the rightmost of the yellow relays under the fuses. Replace that and see if it still does it. With smoke coming from your starter there is a good chance you've damaged it. Don't much like the sound of a bubbling battery either, it must...
