Is this normal or should there be a gaitor

You can get a rubber or leather "boot" to cover the swivel housings however most think that they just hold water and grit and are more trouble than they are worth. I had some on an S111 a few years ago but the motor was nicked before I had chance to make a judgement. I've not had them on any...

Replacing unf bolts with metric equivalents

According to my chart the recommended maximum torque applied to an M12 class 12.9 bolt should be 130Nm lubricated or 165Nm dry. For class 4.8 bolts those figure drop to 40/50Nm which is an enormous difference. Is it possible that the original UNF bolts were high tensile, the equivalent of class...

People pulling out in front of me.

This is very true and somewhat indefensible however most of us that have ridden motor bikes for 40 years develop an unbelievable prescience and 6th sense that makes for survival under the difficult circumstances that is motoring today whatever vehicle we are driving. I remember a quite a few...

People pulling out in front of me.

Having been a biker before a driver I can sympathise, it pi$$es me off when I see just how stupid, myopic a$$wipes in cars drive around completely oblivious to everything outside there air conditioned, airbagged, computerised tin boxes. How's this for an idea, you have to pass your test on...

People pulling out in front of me.

+1 I drive my 'fender in the same way, I did nearly 40 yeas on motorbikes and survived so there must be something worthwhile in that advice.

People pulling out in front of me.

I too find that people give my old defender, with all the bits of heavy duty ironmongery fastened to it a wide berth. White vans, buses, little old ladies in Korean hatchbacks they all seem to avoid being in close proximity, I could get a complex!! Or as I said to the lady in the car park...

    A caliper query

I have helicoiled expensive Porsche callipers under instruction from the boss. Personally I wouldn't do it to my own vehicle. 'fender callipers are so cheap, just buy a new one. While you're at it do both would be my advice.

    Replacing my td5 brakes

I did mine a couple of months ago. New discs, pads, rebuilt callipers with new pistons and seals to all 4 wheels. Examined and repacked wheel bearings and replaced all the brake pipes. Finished off with rebuilding the master cylinder. It's all very doable and straight foreword. The only real...

Can someone tell me what this bolt is for

I think you are talking about the lock stops. The idea is you adjust the bolt in and out so when it touches the swivel housing Bolt on full lock nothing else touches, on mine its the tyres that are the limiting factor. Obviously the further out they are adjusted the poorer full lock will be.

    Shame to see this today

I remember years ago a full(?) a oxygen cylinder was charged to the 240 tonne electric arc furnace where I worked. It made a hell of a bang and quite a mess, fortunately no one was hurt. Procedures were changed to ensure it never happened again, no whole cylinders were allowed in the charge...

What size and makes of mig welder

I've got one of those blue socket jobbies on the wall of my garage with a dedicated 20 amp breaker, no problems using mine on full power. I use a big caravan extension lean so there are no problems with voltage drop if I'm working at some distance from the socket.

What size and makes of mig welder

After owning a Clarke minimig 100e for about 20 years I bought a Clarke 151en. The 100 amp model was not really up to chassis welding without careful weld prep. The 150amp unit is more than enough. Of course you can spend a lot more money and get a "better" machine but for home use and sticking...

I'll have one of the big propane ones if it's any help, they make good air receivers.

    crankshaft bolt dificulty

Its a drain hole, when wading it should be fitted with the correct wading plug, when not wading it should be open to the atmosphere to allow any oil etc to drain.

    New defender release dc100

I understand that this is what we are being told, so how come Merc' can sell the GWagon and Jeep can sell the Wrangler both have similar profile and build issues. As for emissions the current Defender has the latest transit engine there is no reason why it can't have the next generation engines...

Could a new bumper really affect the warranty?

Land Rover, the last bastion of the old style British car industry. They build poor quality cars, sell them at inflated prices and give appalling after sales service. Jaguar seem to have sorted this under TATA's ownership why not Land Rover.

Where do you get your parts?

I don't think Britpart deal direct, they are a supplier to the trade and will therefore negotiate prices individually with the dealers/
