Would a wireless network affect the remote control

I have heard that on Disco Td5's that if you hold the plipper close to the centre of the windscreen, it will often work - the receiver is mounted above the rear view mirror so the closer you can get the keyfob to that would make sense. I go past a shopping centre where I live on the bus, and...

    back door lock

Probably the spring which holds the button up has gone, so when it unlocks, the button doesn't stay up fully, which means it won;t unlock properly. Very common problem on Discovery I's. There is a sticky thread at the top of this forum explaining how to replace a spring - that's for one of the...

    which cv kit

It would be a great help if more details of the vehicle were supplied - I nhave found 3 different kits for Disco's depending on whether it's a 200Tdi or 300Tdi type, and whether the vehicle has antilock brakes. The VIN number would also help - I can put that into Microcat and that should give...

    Flywheel sensor

Just had a look at Rave and the wokshop manual lists symptoms as 1. Engine cranks but fails to start 2. Engine Malfunction light (MIL) stays on all the time 3. Engine misfire, or it runs roughly or stalls if sensor incorrectly fitted Sensor has no backup strategy and it it fails, engine...

    is mtf94

Very much doubt it. You can use MTF 94 in Disco gearboxes instead of ATF which is what was originally specified. This is MUCH thinner than gear oil, which you would put in transfer box, diffs and swivels. Just checked the manual and for these it should be 75W/90 (or meet API GL5 spec)...

    Strange running issue

I had a similar issue on my 300 Tdi in Zimbabwe - there it was caused by dirty fuel. What can happen is that the crud sinks to the bottom of the tank and blocks the bottom holes of the fuel pickup unit. When the tank is above quarter full, fuel can get in the top, but when it gets below...

    300tdi Cold Start Issue

My 300Tdi in Zimbabwe developed a problem where if it was left pointing uphillfor a while, starting was very difficult. Point it downhill and it was fine. This was caused by a leaky diapraghm in the lift pump causing all the fuel in the lines to drain back into the tank. If you are parking on...

    What tubes?

Agree with Richard - I've worked in IT for 20 odd years and getting Microcat to work was a pain. However, the parts information can often explain so much, and also knowing a part number is the quick way to find the best deal for parts. The workshop manual in Rave is a must read for any Disco...

    What tubes?

The black tubes are breathers - I think there will also be one from the front axle. Keep these above the water line! Older Land Rovers had a breather on the axle with a sprung ball bearing to allow hot air out, but prevent water ingress. Later ones use tubes to take the venting point above the...

    Chassis number decode

Have you checked both VIN plates - there's one behind the windscreen on the bottom left hand corner (you should be able to read it from outside the car) as well as the one under the bonnet? I would expect the chassis number to be SALLTGMM32Axxxxxx as you say. If you have Microcat (links...

    switch lighting

Heater controls should light up - the following link Climate Control - Discotech.info documents the procedure and the part numbers. I did mine and its easy. I took the radio out, but you don't have to - search this forum and there are other ways to release the clips holding in the climate...

    Gear change

Is it the change to fourth or the torque converter lockup? If you're not used to the box, it feels like you're in third, whereas you are in 4th but the lockup has not kicked in yet. Mine changes from 3rd to 4th at about 40 (unless you're accelarating hard), and then torque converter locks (to...

    td5 cold radiator.

It's actually a fuel cooler! At the pressures the fuel system works at, the overflow which goes back to the tank would be way too hot, so the returning fuel is cooled to engine coolant temps to lower it before sending it back via the fuel filter to the tank. Cheers!

    Friend detector

Undoing the top couple of bellhousing bolts is a pain. Better if you have an assistant to hold the socket on the bolt while the person under the car undoes it. If you're going for engine out, remove entire engine mount, drop engine as low as it will go and it makes it MUCH easier to get at...

    300tdi Cold Start Issue

Almost certainly glow plug failure, if it starts OK once warm. They tend to fail, and you don't know until all have failed - car will normally start with just one available. Glow plug light does not tell you anything - it purely tells you when the timer has switched off. Take glow plugs out...

    1997 Disco 300tdi diesel injector pump/immobilier

My 300TDi I had in Zimbabwe didn't have a black box on the pump, but then it didn't have a factory alarm system. There was just one wire direct to the solenoid, which effectively was fed from the key. I know as the connector failed while I was trying to overtake someone! Engine stopped with...

    Bonnet removal

Before you take it off, draw a line round the brackets onto the underside of the bonnet with a felt tip pen or similar. Then you'll have a basic alignment when refitting, though almost certainly you'll need to do a minor adjustment after that. Cheers!

Clutch query - how much pedal travel??

Clutch release bearing failing maybe? Mine did after 180000km - friction disk was hardly worn! Also, Disco's are prone to release fork pivot point wearing through - it's a pressed steel item and hinges on a ball joint, and it wasn't strong enough. Hope it's not as it's a engine or gearbox...

    Propshafts

Is your UJ on the front of the propshaft OK? I can imagine that putting a strain on the donut if it's got problems... Cheers!

Heater Matrix Operation Question Discovery 2

Check that you aircon drain pipes are not blocked. If they are, the conndensation from the aircon can't get out the bottom, and can end up collecting round the heater pipes. It then acts as a nice conductor to bring the heat out. I had this happen on a long journey off road in Zimbabwe -...
