I recommend you use the hose pipe trick to locate the blow kermit - will save you removing things "for inspection". I had this on my 4L Defender and only had to do the gaskets on the downpipes, not even exhaust manifold

Aluminium... you could use ali cleaner, or I think i just rubbed mine down with emery paper - and then applied black hammerite. Still looks good two years later. The ones on my defender (4L) were painted from new - the RR (4.6L )I don't know, but they're painted now
