Just noticed you say the 525 is only the td, not tds. The td has 115bhp and tds has 143. Whether that was because it had an intercooler or whether there is more to the tds engine than just that, I dont know..

As far as I am aware they are the same block, head and pump so you shouldn't have any issues on that front, it should bolt up to the gearbox fine, when you have both engines out, its easy enough to look at them and swap over anything that is different (like you say inlet manifold, if needed...

I'd agree with ricc direct power feed from the ignition. If that doesn't work, you could always run a wire from the battery through a separate little switch on the dash and to the solenoid. If you hide the switch a bit is also an extra anti theft thingy :) and theres been a lot of defenders...

Can still get a stone flick up from the road sometimes, old mans beemer does it all the time. Whip wheel off and check brake pads again, could be that the caliper is sticking on one corner wairing the pads out rapidly. If wheel bearings are fine, spin wheel and see if it is free. If not...

If it's the belt like 'oxides' said, I have a feeling they are self tensioning, so if it is squeeking it is probably due replacing, or it could be one of the belt pulley bearings squeeking. Easiest (slightly temporary) fix is to put a little squirt of oil on them if you can get to them :)
