Drop arm ball joint caused the worst of this on mine - but as said could be any of the many swivels on the linkages. Not expensive (tho drop arm benefits from hiring a mega custom puller ime....!). Good luck - and check it out soon, mine was scarily worn by the time I looked at it :(

I do believe it is called a range-change linkage - seriously. If you broke it twice I'd suggest some tlc on the actual actuator on the box itself too - sounds like its dirty and seizing (likely to be covered in crud and some corrosion), then with a new linkage Bob's yer Wotsit I would think...
