    plastic clip thingy

White plastic clip thing. Holds slave cylinder push rod to clutch release lever. I must say, we do put an awful lot of trust in the little bit of plastic don't we? Clip appears complete. What do you want to do? I'm looking for some screws to hold floor down as they seem to be a short...

    plastic clip thingy

Slob knows where this is going from other threads - but I have a spare gearbox in the garage from a Series 3. I'll go and have a look and see if it has those bits on.

    Rear Diff probs

That's my dad's approach. Except, he got overtaken by newer models. So, whislt he has a yard full of S1 and S2a donors vehicles, the one that goes is a series 3.

    smokey joe.

My dad used to have a series 2a a long time ago. Blue smoke all the time. Stripped head off and found that someone in the REME had not fitted any valve stem seals. The carefully prepared replacement head, valves etc was fitted. We de-coked it too BTW. It was the bollox after that! Got another 15...

    you Brits are f***ed

I got a hard time from Manchester police for shed loads of unpaid parking fines. I told them I had never been to Manchester in my car for the period in question. Two things: - on the one hand plod just took my word for it - on the other, plod made no more investigations into cloned plates...

Noisy and vibrating when pulling up hills????????????

I'm going to suggest prop shaft spider joints. Although I think this would vibrate at road speeds, not just going up hills. i think this might be slobs point?

    headlights

light bulbs are 12V - but if you put them in a mircowave oven, set the timer, they will light up and you can run them off 240V ac - but not for very long. You can run the microwave off a two stroke genset in the back - scwrewfix are doing some for £50 which will run a 650W microwave...

    Rear Diff probs

I'd be inclined to try and buy a complete rear axle. You can get these quite cheap. That way, you get a spare diff AND spare half shafts, immersed in oil and wrapped in a metal casing. If you area really lucky, it will also come with spare back plates, drums and slave brake cylinders. There...

    Problems starting my 109..

I had a problem like this. I didn't have a meter at the time, but found that the starter solenoid/relay was located on the bulkhead, in the engine bay and behind the engine. As slob says, on 2.25l petrols the solenoid is remote (mines is a 24V FFR vehicle just add a bit more complexity). The...

Sounds like gearbox failure is pretty terminal if its dumped oil on the road. Whatever has happened its gearbox out I think. You can trade in dead gearbox for a re-conditioned one. I've got a spare one from a series 3 which needs overhauling.

Vince22 - is that your landy in the avatar? I am sure I followed this specimen through North Wales a while back. The large tyres and expanded wheelarches being distinctive. I was following in a black defender TD5 near Betws Garmon.

    Hi there

I recommend a really good book: ''First Overland'' by Tim Slessor - published in 1958. It tells the story a trip from London to Singapore and back, overland using Series 1 land rovers. My choice of vehicle would be a Series 2a - nice strong gearbox, cheap parts and you don't need a laptop...

    I'm new and need advice

The rattling gear lever. 'Normal' is so emotive. If gearbox works OK and gears can be selected without difficulty, then it could very well be 'tolerated' and so become 'Normal'. If by 'Normal' you mean 'designer's intent' then it is not normal. My view is that the gear lever ball is...

    zenith carb manual

I don't have any manuals, but if you find any i'd be interested in a copy. The LR manual certainly shows how they come apart. The big problem is rectifying the wear. In my recent and painful experience, the refurb kits available are not really adequate. What is needed is for the carb body to...

    blowing series 111

Have a look at the first joint - between manifold and downpipe. The downpipe is quite long and there is quite a bit of unsupported pipe between the manifold and the next support. Essential to take up engine movements on starting and taking up drive. My S3 has brass nuts (!) which come loose...
