May have possibly bent valves trying to undo crankshaft pulley bolt :(

Hmm cost of shipping a head to Livingstone, would probably not make it worthwhile. You could perhaps pop up to U-pull it at Inverkeithing they had about 10 freelanders in before Christmas, sure 1 of them would have a good head on it

Where about in Scotland are you, I have 9 Freelanders at the moment, so can't take another one, but I could probably do you a deal on a complete cylinder head

    Freelander 1 Rear Diff Noise

Hi all A couple of weeks ago when I was taking one of my Freelanders out of the field the front wheels lost grip and spun up a bit. Freelander got out ok but after this incident I noticed I had a dull knocking noise from the rear of the vehicle if turning left or right at low speed. The noise...

How to recondition a VCU yourself.

It was 5kg at 1.2m, was 126k miles. VCU was on an L series. Tyres were all identical and pretty much same tread depth. Was on a vehicle I bought at auction for £300 so expected something knackered. Tested the VCU once I had replaced the IRD Can just about turn the VCU with a 4' bar on it so...

How to recondition a VCU yourself.

Yep that's the stuff Tiny dribble of stuff oozed out, going to give it 24 hours upside down and hope. Was 7 minutes on the VCU test so I expect it is nearly seized completely.

How to recondition a VCU yourself.

What's Polydimethylsiloxane? asked Santa for some 100,000 silicone oil. Well drilled it with two 8mm holes and got the first disk, can't see any goo trying too ooze out yet, will see what it is like in the morning Going to try the grease pump method of filling first. Will report back once I...

How to recondition a VCU yourself.

Going to give this a go over Christmas, as I have 3 VCU's that are shot. Got a couple questions 1. how deep does the hole need to be/how thick is the metal on the VCU? 2. How do I know when I have drilled deep enough? Thanks

Freelander 1 Upper timing chain tension

I had the head off my TD 4 earlier this year to do a HG only to find a crack in the timing cover, so I just replaced the engine. RAVE has good instructions on how to remove the head. have you got a copy of RAVE? To release the tension on the timing chain you need to remove the cam cover and...

How many people driving petrol Hippos?

Down to 7 now as just given 1 to GF. Only ever have 2 insured an taxed others are either 'spare' in case one of the road ready ones has a problem or just get driven round my land collecting logs, etc. Cheaper than a quad.

Got 4 petrol and 4 diesel, prefer the petrol on a cold day as they heat up quicker

    Freelander 1 Are driveshafts interchangeable

now that I have swapped out my knackered IRD I need to refit the drive shafts. However I believe the driver side drive shaft inner CV is worn (big crack in old IRD) Can I fit the front driver side driveshaft from a 1.8 k-series into my 2l L-series?

Freelander 1 L Series no drive

The IRD from the 1.8 is known to be good so I will put that in. The 1.8 was rolled by the PO and I originally bought it for its engine (that's another story) so now I have a use for the IRD. I will put the knackered IRD at the back of the garage as I suspect at some point I will need the pinion...

Freelander 1 L Series no drive

Will the IRD from a 1.8 or a TD4 fit? I have both for parts. assume it is best to rob the drive shaft from either the 1.8 or td4 as well if the cv could have caused the crack. Now to try some pictures

Freelander 1 L Series no drive

IRD out after a bit of a struggle with the coolant pipes. Got a few photo's but not sure how to put them on the forum. can email the or if anyone can let me know how to post them Should have spotted part of the problem before I removed the IRD, but it had so much oil and muck on it. Driver...

Freelander 1 L Series no drive

Started removing the IRD today. Removed the oil drain plug and no oil came out, but lots of metal filings on the plug. Hopefully get the whole IRD out Monday or Tuesday so I can split it and find out what has broken
