    Just a word of warning, Dextron 3 is a different oil to dextron 2 and I personally dont think it cross referances, Im not sure if its compatible with certain oil seals etc...

    In some auto gearboxes one gear was a direct top, meaning in that gear the gearbox output shaft should be the same rpm as engine rpm, if it wasent within a percentage then a fault was recorded and limp home was selected which is usually 3rd in a 4 speed box?

    Do the ecu's compair the engine rpm and the gearbox rpm to check for slip etc? if there was a discrepancy between the two rpm's then it may fault code the slower of the two...just a thought...?

    Could be diff pinion bearings or worn diff...? Have a look to see if either of your diff drive flange seals are wet with oil and have any sideways movement? A quick check is to drain the axles and see if you have metalic debris on the drain plug magnets etc...

    I have never had a head gasket damage the cats, just run the car it should clear, no need to remove the exhaust and heat it...most modern catalytc cars generate their own water by the way they run, My 4.0 steams like mad untill the exhaust gets hot...

    If you have had a head gasket problem that you have now repaired you may have a residue of water in the exhaust which is just burning off as steam, drive it for a few days to see if it clears, if its not loosing water or pressurising then it shouldent do any harm...this sometimes happends...

    I wouldent mind betting you have disturbed or damaged a lambda while doing the cat work, they dont take too well to being disturbed, best thing to do is get it on a eobd scanner to check whats working and whats not...Gems Air flow meters are more reliable than thor ones I believe...

    Sounds Like you have a inlet valve stuck open and the tapping noise is the tappet rattleing, have you done a compression test or had the rocker covers off to check the valve operation...?
