    Loss of power in Salford!

Wouldn't that be steam rather than smoke?

    Loss of power in Salford!

What colour smoke? Black smoke would most likely indicate a problem with the turbo or intercooler pipes, blue smoke would suggest oil is being burned, white smoke would suggest unburnt diesel, probably injector problem.

Bad motorway handling - shxttin a brick!

Ok, Is there any play in the steering when stationary? Is there any play in the steering ball joints? Are the swivel pin bearings becoming worn? Is the steering damper functioning correctly? Are the tyres properly inflated? Are the radius arm bushes worn? Vague steering and wandering could be...

    110 3.5 V8 Power gains?

Not necessarily. I have owned 2 3.9's and mechanically they have been superb. There is no reason that a properly maintained 3.9 shouldn't last 180k miles at least. They only really fail if neglected or abused.

LR Breakers in or near Bristol

Try Christian Autos in Kingswood. 01179 601443. If not them, then CWS (01458 834930) in Glastonbury should be able to help.

    110 3.5 V8 Power gains?

All 3.9's were efi as standard, wiring it up is fairly simple and has been covered on here in detail.

    Towing 3.5t behind a 90 with 35"tyres

Ahh, sorry, I thought you were talking about your 90. What sort of Transit do you have? 3500kg max train weight sounds a bit poor. Sarah's 1.8 Gaylander has a higher train weight than that.

    110 3.5 V8 Power gains?

Why the hell would he want to do all that? It would be much cheaper to buy a 2nd hand 3.9 from a knackered Discovery and drop it in. Immediate improvement to 180bhp, with a lot less buggering about.

    Towing 3.5t behind a 90 with 35"tyres

If you have B+E on your driving licence, then you can tow any vehicle and trailer combination up to the max train weight of your landy. The max gross weight of your 90 is around 2400kg iirc, with a max towing weight of 3500kg this gives a max train weight of 5900kg. EDIT; Just realised you...

    Towing 3.5t behind a 90 with 35"tyres

Couldn't be more wrong if you tried  a B+E entitlement allows to to tow any trailer provided that neither the vehicles max towing capacity or its max train weight is exceeded. The 3.5t train limit applies if you have category B entitlement only.

    Towing 3.5t behind a 90 with 35"tyres

Depends what licence you have. If you have B+E categories on your licence, you can tow any trailer up to the towing vehicles max plated towing weight, provided that the vehicle and trailer combination do not exceed the vehicles max gross train weight. If you only have B category on your licence...

    How to spot a ringer?

Or in my case, when you realise that 3 kids (now 4), 2 dogs, 3 kids bikes and a weeks worth of holiday luggage simply won't fit in your current car.

    Poor Show, Defender Owners!

I am perfectly aware of that, almost all of the screw in towing eyes I have seen are stamped with 35 kn, which equates to 3570 kg. Any vehicle that is so bogged that it requires more than 3500 kg of tractive effort to move it will require recovery by a tractor rather than my Land Rover.

    Poor Show, Defender Owners!

I always have a tow strap and a couple of shackles in the back of my landy, and am more than happy to pull people out of trouble. I always make sure my towing equipment is in good condition and take simple precautions like making sure no-one is stood near enough to get hit by flying recovery...

    discovery td5 vs 90 200tdi

I have just gone from a Defender V8, to a very late, (1999 plate) Discovery 1 V8, and I must say I am very pleased with my Discovery. It is much more comfortable than the Defender, more than capable enough for the off-road work I do, and can still carry and tow all the kit I ever need for work...
