    Manky ACE fluid

For the want of a better word yes, its that sort of low frequency buzzing you get at 900 to 1200 ish rpm. It has always been there, just seems to be more noticeable now.

    Manky ACE fluid

My ACE has been a bit "whurrier" than normal lately. Perhaps just the cold weather but thought id change out the fluid in the tank altho the fluid is only a year and a bit old. Surprised to see this. Prob result of full pipework changeout. Still to drive again to see if whurring is reduced.

    Td5 v's Mx5

+1 lol, the jealousy is always noticeable from folks who arent driving proper off roaders. You probably find these X5 drivers have got stuck in snow etc while the landys cruise by. Ive actually seen an X5 struggling in the snow...hilarious.

    window regulator cables

Yep its a pain in the a#$e. Ive got one to do over the weekend and not looking forward to it. Cant even give any advice...as you already see, its easu to see what you have to do but its not for those with a short fuse!!

    sluggish towing

Yes I would be expecting a smell of burning brakes too if they were stuck on, altho it does seem like there has been a problem after you reversed up the incline. The design is pretty poor. I got caught out once reversing trailer into drive when one wheel just caught the kerb but of course I...

    time for some alloys

Thats is WELL COOL!! I can also join that list of folks who have a set of standard 16sin garage which im hanging onto for some reason. I bought a set of 17s with intention of changing back to 16s this summer to run the rest of the life out the tyres.....but didnt cos I like the 17s too much :o

    ACE pump fail

Wow...650...thats steep considering it takes no more than 2 hours...and thats having 2 cups of tea and doing it for the first time. The pump cost between 300 and 350 new at most places but you can pick up a used one on ebay to get you by for some time. If you know how to use a spanner then you...

    sluggish towing

+1 on the guys suspecting trailer brakes. I tow heavy bait trailer regular and you do know its there but the old girl doesnt struggle by any means. Ive seen plenty problems with trailer brakes such as brake shoe linings coming adrift and jamming everything up.

looking to buy but would like a steer

I wish to embarass grumpygel further by congratulating him again on the write up, theres not many people take the time out to give such good advice without some kinda reward being offered. Agree totally, ive been running td4 for almost 5 years and its been fantastic. It wants attention from time...

What have you pulled with your discovery?

Ahh one of my favourite parts of the year, I'll be doing exactly that next month after a 3 day session on loch awe. Alway renews my faith in the old td5 when we reach the viewpoint. :)

    Major brake failure.

You're bang on mate...it was such a place and ive learnt my lessons since. I would also agree you should only diy stuff if competent and have some technical ability. It is a bad situation to think many places may not be the experts they claim to be. As you mentioned, there are usually some...

    Major brake failure.

Apologies I just saw mistake in my own post...should have been two clips in each drum...one on each shoe, thanks Nodge. Appreciate what Diesel Do comments about movement of shoes within drum especially as the shoes tend to wear themselves a groove in the drum. However you can see from CJKs...

    Major brake failure.

Wow...lucky escape, as Optimus suggested, it seems like theres been a shortage of fluid in the first place. For the rear brake shoe to jump from the cylinder I woukd guess that one of the retaining pins would have to have failed. There should be two on each shoe to keep them securely against the...

    Transfer box / gearbox fill

I use an old hand priming bulb and hose for outboard engines. Which I had lying around among my boat bits. Does the job perfectly albeit taking a bit of time....5 mins or so. Obv make sure if you can get one that its well flushed with oil first to remove any traces of fuel if its used. Even new...

Lack of power below 2000RPM/MAF etc etc etc....

Sounds like MAP sensor could be at fault. Do a search and you find all you need to know, doesnt take long to take inlet manifold off and clean. The reason disconnecting MAF will improve drive is because for mass air flow you need the input for all 3 sensors..flow, temp and pressure so with MAF...

Hi Towing with a lift question

Ditto, as already sit...definetly get it sitting level else it might fishtail all over. I found this out the hard way when using my disco 2 to tow my boat trailer, it was everywhere due to nose being slightly elevated. Now use a witter adjustable bar to correct height and it tows perfect. Weight...

Ace pump left in after disconnection

You should find out from wherever you bought it why its in this condition. ACE pumps dont tend to last long without fluid in them. Its likely it will eventually seize, taking your belt , tensioner and possibly your crank pulley with it. Its unusual that its not giving you warnings already. Most...

    Are they all this bad!!?

Yep mine same, one patch done on a 2001. The rear part of chassis is horrible compared to rest of it. Having said that the patchvwas done 2 years ago and have had no more holes since and I check regular. Its the bit I cant get to near the fuel tank that concerns me tho as the rest has been well...

    Greying bumpers etc

I use a turtle wax product callec black chrome and it works well. Bottle says to buff with dry cloth after after applying but I dont even do that, just apply couple of hours before washing and comes up good.

    Rotten heartbreak !!

It is one to think about, the repair would probably be the best option. Ive had repairs done on mine and you can be sure that it wontbe the last as the rust does occur fromthe inside out in most cases. Buying another one, you might get a good-ish chassis but got get caught out with something...
